Over the years one of the most popular ways to turn the internet into your personal bank machine is Affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing involves getting a special link from a person or company that sells a product. That link can be tracked using affiliate software back to you. When a purchase is made from your special affiliate link you earn a commission. So all you had to do was promote your affiliate link.
In the early days if was difficult to find places to advertise affiliate links. Paying for advertising was expensive and difficult. You had to convince website owners to you're your ads on their sites.
Then on day Google created an advertising network called Adwords that let anyone and everyone tell Google what search terms were important to the product they were selling. When a search was done on those terms Google would display their ad with affiliate link in the search results.
As soon as marketers saw the power in this they started creating training manuals with names like Google Cash and Google Profits. These programs taught thousands of people how to make millions promoting their affiliate links on Google Adwords.
Despite the success this method has had over the years the Google system has a flaw. When a searcher types in something they want to know more about, Google checks their giant bank of information and returns relevant searches. But the problem is anyone could be doing a search for the term the advertiser bids on and Google has no way to know who is doing the search.
That doesn't seem like a big flaw but when you are paying for every click that little detail can make or break a campaign.
For example lets say you are selling a product in the low carb diet category that you know sells very well to men 40-50 years old. If you are advertising on Google then you would bid on search terms like "low carb diet" or "protien diet". Now the problem with Google is when someone searches on the term "low carb diet" there is no way for Google to know if the searcher is a 15 year old girl or a 45 year old man. Either one of those searchers can click on your ad because Google will display your ad to them. If the 15 year old girl clicks on your ad she probably will not make a purchase and you will be charged for the click.
So the logical next step in affiliate marketing is to design a system where advertisers can actually bid on relevant keywords as well as chose the ideal target demographic to advertise to.

I'm not really a fan of facebook; I think it's a nice notion but they haven't joined the open-alliance. Google's very supportive of open-source and open-collaboration and I think that weighs in its favor. Too bad their social-networking site isn't big in the U.S.
