Drama in the Sky

Our day started out very foggy today, but by noon the fog had burned off. But the fog didn't exactly go away; instead it piled up in the sky to the north of us, giving a dramatic cloudscape for the afternoon. I first noticed the dramatic sky walking on my "country lane" route up on Beacon Hill Rd., where I took the first two shots. I kept going until I came to King Park on the southern end of Newport Harbor, where I promptly claimed a bench and started shooting. I shot in black & white with a circular polarizer filter to make the clouds as clear and dramatic as possible.

Those shots are absolutely stunning. We don't get dramatic cloud covers in Southern California - when a storm comes in it makes a uniform grey cover that stays until the storm passes. When I travel to other places, I spend so much time staring at the sky and enjoying the clouds. The black & white that you chose to portray these scenes really adds a lot to the contrast of the sky and the land.

VERY nice photographs! I fully intend to get a polarizer. These are great images. I took some amazing photographs yesterday, shooting for a lightning bolt which I never did get, but instead got a full arc rainbow! LOVE these in black and white--I never thought of shooting in black and white last eve, but in the end and glad I wasn't!
