I know this is not within my normal purview, but it is one of life's (my own maybe) little mysteries. Who in the world gets turned on by thin, emaciated, tooth-pick sized women?
Even in my young, hormone raging days the thought of holding someone like that (Twiggy in those days) would generate immediate bouts of nausea. I'm sure they would say the same about the thought of being with me, but, hey, get real.
I love movies and television, and I don't mean documentaries (though I will occasionally watch them). I want to be entertained and escape the stuff of life that irritates me. The type of material that I write about on here.
Revulsion from seeing the likes of Parker, Laura Flynn Boyle and the multitude of other anorexics spoils that profoundly. I like my women with some substance to them, some definition, something, for crying out loud.
I saw a picture in the newspaper yesterday from her new movie where she was with Chris Noth and in a wedding dress. Unbelievably, I don't know how the dress stayed in place. Maybe they glued it to her. Her scrawny skeleton was clearly visible.
Please, someone tell me, who in the world likes to see this type of deprivation and is attracted to it. Maybe other women, anorexics? It certainly can't be red-blooded American men.
In wonder,
The Hammer

alpha female: I can starve myself more cruelly than you can.
I never was attracted to Sex in the City, but that was mostly because I never really cared about shoes or handbags.
By the way, my hubby shares your opinion.
I don't want to have any extra weight on me, but I love my curves the way they are so I won't be losing any weight either.
I just mused about this very subject myself and wrote an article called "How Thin is too Thin?" (here on gather - when I read on CNN Europe about France proposing a law to go after the media which promotes anorexia and extreme thinness.
There is a whole subculture that supports anorexia and feeds off those images. While it deserves to be written about and discussed, some how I don't think it belongs under the "NEWS" headline here on Gather... this isn't news, it's commentary on entertainment and culture, style and fashion, but news??? I don't think so...Who makes these decisions on Gather anyway???
The same comments were made about the movie "Then She Found Me" with Helen Hunt. Helen Hunt is now "old", meaning she is not a teenager, and thing. That is how people look in real life. Also, unless people are thin, they are usually fat, meaning they have an eating problem. When they starve rats in experiments, the rats usually live about twice as long as normal rats, so perhaps that is more how people are supposed to look if they are healthy.
Anyway, I like Jessica Alba, she is sexy and beautiful, but I'd rather watch a Sarah Jessica Parker movie almost anyday.
1. Cynthia, it is I who chose the news group and keyword, not gather. I believe this goes far beyond entertainment to a real and current health issue.
2. Bruce, I too think she is good actress. I remember her first gig on TV as an ADA on a law show, and her first movie (I believe) with Steve Martin, in which she got him to get a high colonic.
3. You don't have to be skinny to be sexy and a good actress. Jennifer Love Hewett is both and a very good business woman. But, even she buckled a little to the mass media criticism and lost some weight, which she didn't need to do. Hopefully she won't starve herself.
I still question this. Sure ultra thin women and anorexia have been written about, to a great extent in recent years. It is an important socio-cultural phenomena. But "NEWS" it is not. I was anorexic myself as a teenager. I and many other women share this battle. I overcame it. Other women like Karen Carpenter for instance died of it.
The fact that Sarah Jessica Parker is very thin, too thin by your standards, is not "News"...
I don't understand why people are wondering who thinks ultra-thin women are all over the media. Hello! just take a look at the magazines in the rack the next time you are at the grocery store. Or what about the actresses on television and in films? I don't consider them 'real women' even though Hollywood and the media would like all of us to believe they are.
I work in the fashion industry (I'm a buyer)and have yet to understand why size 2 is the ideal. I buy more size 8 and 10s than any other size, and the women buying them look great. A size 2 is not something to achieve by starving, thanks for posting this. A ton of women think they need to starve themselves to be attractive to a man. If a man wanted a tiny skeleton, they'd date a lemur. Be happy with your own size, and everyone else wont matter!
but then half of you or more are saying SJP is not even pretty....and you wonder why we woman are so messed up about self image.
shame on you all.
If there is any blame to be had here, I believe it is in the pressure these folks have to go through, from managers, studios, the media, and the fickle public. I actually feel sorry for them.
I Do NOT have any time for those who promote anorexia as a life style and those people I think are hideous.
I have not seen the movie yet, and probably will not, so I'm just curious
What I think though is that most people do not want this to be so, so
they want to think and say it is unheathly, but the number one thing
that makes us Americans lose years from our life expectancy is too
much weight, and a bad diet.
