Walking (or Being Walked by) the Dog.

While visiting our family in IL a few of our days got spent at my father and stepmothers house.
They have a 10yr old 1/2 Great Pyrenees, 1/2 German Shepherd.  His name is Benny and he is a gentle giant!  He really is the sweetest, most well behaved dog.

Benny and Madeline became quick friends!  Benny was so good with her and she just LOVED him!

He usually looks like this:

But he had just had a trip to the groomer about a week before we came and they shaved him.


Here are a few pics of Benny and Maddie playing together

My father put her on Benny's back and she thought that was just great,  Benny didn't mind at all.  

or course after that any time Benny was laying down she wanted to climb on him :) 

At one point Madeline decided she wanted to walk Benny around the yard.

as they got near the sidewalk though, it was clear who was leading who, lol.  Benny new the boundaries of the yard and kept Maddie in them.  They quickly were turned around and headed down the driveway towards the backyard.

 

They got to the backyard but their walk wasn't over yet.  they turned around and went back again.

By then Benny had enough walking and was ready to relax in the grass :)

We have BIG dogs and they are so gentle with the kids! Goes to show you can have ibg dogs and little kids together! So sweet!

This is a charming photo essay, Amanda. The dog is gorgeous, but I've never seen a Great Pyrenees shaved like that before. He must be much cooler that way.

try walking a 140lb great pyrannese when you only way 120. i would have had an easier time if i had strapped a saddle on him and rode him like a horse.

What a beautiful photo essay! Children learn an amazing amount from how we treat our animals - and it is obvious your daughter is learning to be a caring, gentle, curious soul. My favorite photo is the one with Benny laying on his back and your daughter pending over, I'm guessing to rub his belly. Thank you so much for sharing!

Those photos are the best. The contrast between the large dog and little child is super. With some slight editing or addition of text, you could turn this into one heck of a kid's book, especially since so many little children (those not used to dogs) are both fascinated and a bit fearful of big dogs.

This would appeal to ALL kids and might even help the fearful ones. We always had dogs and it always surprised me how many visiting kids were fearful of dogs. I grew up with dogs, never was scared of them.
