Way back when in the 80s, Minneapolis got about three free gay newspapers (paid for by advertising). Being free, I picked them up and read them. I even had a cartoon I drew that was in one of them for awhile.
Suddenly out of the blue there were "Gay Marriage" articles. And it was because the Republicans wanted to ban it. I had no idea where they got that from because it really wasn't in the gay community dialogue at all until the Republicans brought it up. The gay community's reaction to it, at first, was. "Why would gays want to get married and be like those unhappy straight people." And stuff like that. It took the gay community a while to warm up to this thing the Republicans wanted to ban.
But it got the topic started and it didn't go away, and now the articles are (we still have one gay paper) we want what everybody else has!!! Now we want the right to marry. Gay marriage is the main political topic.
Why the Republicans started this whole topic? I have no clue. Was there a gay activist in San Francisco talking about it (that the gay community itself was ignoring) that scared the Republicans? Was it to scare and distract straight people from something? Were gays just the scapegoat of the season and that's what they came up with?
Regardless, it happened, and it launched the gay marriage topic. The Republicans opened something that will never be closed. Soon it will happen, because prejudiced like that is unconstitutional.
And I'll have to thank the Republicans for getting the whole ball rolling in the first place.

This issue to me is like the Death Penalty controversy. It just goes on and on. IF there be a judge about the private lives of others, it sure is way above my head and below my knees.
I treasure my friends, they put a lot into their relationships, and many are so involved in their communities, busy with really good projects, it is sad that discrimination, is allowed. If one does not like the idea of gays, leave them alone and do your own thing.
I much prefer their honesty over the sad fact the some people try to use God as in the Texas case involving all the children, and this country has turned their eyes away while they have built their camps for years. What is the rationalization for that??? A religion? I have often wondered what "God" feels about his participation in many situations. I personally have not ever talked with him face to face, with real audio.
I also find this wrong. with We have legalities for "palimony", and in the States that still have it, or even mention it, Common Law marriage. There many other situations of the "romantic involvement" persuasion, and as I see it, being entitled to legal privileges should be the right of anyone in a partnership. I am sure I will hear about this, but I am sticking to some really good people.... Ellen B

I can understand why some would want Gay Marriages because of the legal protection for the one you love Like in insurance and your will and so on ALso I have known Gay couples who have raised childrn and it is hard to ive both partners parental rights in a same sex relationship
Ever feel like a Jewish nazi? For the life of me, I will never, ever understand why any gay person in their right mind would ever vote against their own best interests like this. It simply defies all logic.
Republicans use the gay issue as one more way to drive big brother into our personal lives, to control and dominate. The big government party will always be just that, because they simply cannot help themselves. They feel it their duty to tell everyone how to live.
It's part of their make-up, I believe. Liberals believe that, as a whole, individuals are good and, left on their own, will do the right thing more often than not. Republicans, on the other hand, because that, as a whole, individuals are evil (projection, anyone?), and therefore must be controlled by a forceful, strong, domineering, all-intrusive government.
Meanwhile, the most threatening thing to heterosexual marriage is, as it always has been, heterosexual marriage.
I think the moment Gay marriages are legal in every state of the union, the economy with turn around instantly!
