I'm not talking about the ridiculous expense of it. I'm talking about WAR being such an old fashioned thing that it doesn't work in the modern world for "nation states". A "real" war would mean global nuclear destruction. What we have now is a "war on terror" that isn't even a "war" (but words do get abused when used for George Orwell 1984 type propaganda, and that's what we're getting). The terrorist thing is more of a "police action". The difference? The big main one is that a war is fought and won or lost, but a police action goes on without end, and acts a lot more low key. And a President can abuse his power when he's a "War President" but he can't if he just has an endless police action going on in the background.
We should have a strong National Guard for here, for when we get our big earthquakes. And to keep Canada from attacking (did you know they once, way back, had a plan to conquer Minneapolis? - and I bet they STILL want it - then it would be thought of here as a Southern Town - southern for them anyway).
And NATO can take care of international war stuff, if we really decide that we need to bomb the tarnation out of something. NASA can be in charge of developing the highest tech drone planes and robot spies (they'll use them on Mars, too).
But as long as we have the Pentagon then we'll have war drums LOUDLY drumming for all sorts of things. Like they say, when all you have is a big hammer, the world looks like a bunch of nails.

We need to put a border up on the Canadian border to stop the Manitoba juggernaut..
There, I yelled.
And NATO can take care of international war stuff,
Uh, Peter, I hate to burst your bubble hon, but Canada is one of the main members of Nato. In other words the two ideas... Protecting the US against Canada and using Nato to fight our international conflicts would be mutually exclusive!
Besides which, except for Steven Harper and his Bush lovin' buddies. Most of Canada is happy Not being part of the US. In fact the last time Canada toyed with the idea of expansion they were talking with the Turks and Caicos island group near the Virgin Islands, about annexing them. Why go for more sub arctic territory when you can get a tropical paradise?
In a sense, war is what we pay the pentagon for isn't it? I know it sounds strange, but a lot of government agencies get away with doing as little as possible. These guys are some of the only ones earning their keep. ha ha. Crazy little world. Can we have a plague already?
After all who needs them.
You can't be serious? We've already brought democracy to many places in the world including Iraq.
You are awesome ~~~ You shall always be MY KING!!!
4 more years . . .
4 more years . . .
4 more years . . .
SAY WHAT?
I SAID
Rather than
4 more years of George W. Bush in another face!
That alone would scale them back.
I will pay for all social programs - you do not have to.
You pay for all military programs - I do not have to.
Sound like a deal?
