In Ballard Park the trails are fully shaded now, and the forest floor has the usual shade-grown plants...
like Canadian Mayflower:

and Lily of the Valley:

and this fern in the process of unfurling:

While overhead in the trees the birds feed and keep watch and call out. Two Eastern Towhees stopped feeding on tree blooms long enough to call to each other as I came through the area. There was a male:

and a female:

On the floor of the old quarry the meadow is growing in quite well. Along the fringe where the grass is short there are Indian Strawberries:

and Yellow Wood Sorrel:

While out in the tall grass of the meadow itself the Red Clover is beginning to bloom:

And along the trails the Honeysuckle is in full bloom, perfuming the air:

Down on Gooseneck Cove the result of the May foliage burst is very scenic:

And in the short grass by the side of the road the Scarlet Pimpernel is beginning to appear:

Tomorrow - Memorial Day - I'm going to climb the memorial tower in Miantonomi Park on the north end of Newport, and you're invited along. Make sure you have your Wheaties for breakfast!

Coming late to this article but haven't been doing much on Gather this past week because 1. tripped and fell last Thursday in classroom and got a hairline fracture on my left hand; 2. end of year paperwork at school overwhelming; and 3. going to the nursing home, the zoo, etc eating all my time. Hopefully, I'm back.
