This is supposed to be the biggest weekend of the year at this Indian Horse Camp. Every Memorial Day weekend they conduct calf-roping contests, but this year there are probably no more than 20 rigs, with double that number of people and horses. In years past I have seen this park fill up until there was almost not a level place to park a rig anywhere. That would probably be 100 to 200 people and horses.
I don't know if the poor turnout is because of the high cost of gas, or the unexpected bad weather. A week ago it was so hot, I had my air conditioner running night and day. But then, at the end of the workweek, the jet stream brought fog, dark clouds, and cold rain along with stiff winds that let up only at about noon today. It is still breezy and cold, but the moon is out and spooky looking clouds are drifting across the sky. No one at this end of the park has a campfire. After the rain that would be allowed because the fire hazard is down. The rain was not the misty moisty kind that I would have expected at this time of year, but hard rain that pounded on my trailer roof. It didn't last long.
I'm just sitting here in my trailer with my cats and two dogs listening to the Gumbo channel on TV. I really like that Dixieland and Zydeco music. I get exercise without even trying because of all the foot tapping the music inspires. Those bands don't rely on just guitars, keyboards, and drums. They use a lot of very good brass and a variety of other instruments like accordions or concertinas. And there are lots of instrumentals without someone wailing unintelligible lyrics along with the band. They are playing something called 'No Shoes Zydeco" right now. I love those Cajuns!
Sherpa, the old female dog I inherited from some homeless people last Christmas, is curled up on her doggie bed close to the heater, and Tiger Tommy, the feral cat that lurked for months in my oak tree before deciding that I could be trusted, is curled right up against her. They are both sort of a generic color; Sherpa looks very much like a coyote, and Tommy is a muscle-bound gray tiger cat. They are so cute together.
My $600 didn't stretch to getting me a new prescription for glasses, but I think my health insurance covers enough of the expense that I can get them sometime this summer. My pickup is fixed up with new tires and new battery, but gas is up to $4.18 here and the storeowner is going to raise the price again any day. He usually jumps about .20 cents at a time. My pickup is going to do a lot of resting in the shade of my oak tree. I'll go for the mail and visit the laundromat once a week - on Wednesday or Thursday from now on if I can, and make no more than one trip a month to town. Maybe I'll have to get a horse if the price goes to $10 a gallon. I wonder how much alfalfa will cost then. They grow it about 50 miles away down in the Imperial Valley, and there is a feed store here that will stay supplied.
The meds by mail failed me and I am without two of my seven medications for about five days. I've got enough coumadin of various strengths to fake it, but I am very displeased. Apparently the people at the clinic called in the order, but the transmission was cut off, and neither the clinic nor the pharmacy investigated or resent the order. I found out Friday too late to do anything about it until next Tuesday. Oh well, I've probably lived long enough anyhow.
Guess I will turn in so I will wake up in time to listen to all the Sunday political talk shows tomorrow.
Good night.

Anyway, congrats on the Pickup upgrades. We'll sleep better thinking you'll be safe on the road.
The LA Times ran some stats today indicating that traffic is reducing here and I've actually noticed the difference. There is a major freeway curve that was causing a huge backup every morning of the week, just north of where I live (Heavy traffic can't handle curves). Anyway, for the last few weeks, without any improvement offered by Caltrans, the backups have totally disappeared.
I guess you could call that a silver lining, but it's not a welcome cloud.
And the news clips last week of our president surrounded by Arabs, looking like a queen bee in mating deason, was no less than sickening. Donald Trump observed on Fox News that it was no way to negotiate. That's a joke. Bush negotiate? What, for higher prices so his pals and relatives can make even more money?
I hate to say it, but the many who voted for this administration twice have reaped what they sowed...the rest of us are victims...
The weather is really screwed up.
This morning he had a nose bleed. I'm wondering if that is the effects of the coumadin...known here as warfarin or rat poison.
The sun beat me up this morning, so I let my cats and dogs out earlier than usual. The coyotes won't venture close because of the extra campers and their dogs, and Smokey Joe and Sherpa will keep the dogs away.
I forgot to mention that because of Digitek being recalled I don't have a digitalis type med either until I get the subsistute my new doctor ordered. I think the clinic might sell me a few pills to tide me over until I received what the pharmacy will send. I have used up what they gave me last week. The coumadin or in my case, the generic substitute, warfarin, is the one I don't like to fool around with. I have been taking it since 1997 when I had a blood clot that gave me a 'blue leg' after a knee replacement.
Wil, you have become a whole EMT team taking care of Robert and your extended family that needs help too. No one needs me any more except my dogs and cats. It makes me sad, but it is also a relief after feeling like the baloney in the generation sandwich for so many years.
Oh - check out the Memorial Day offering by Nathan Schauer. He calls it ''War Journal'. It is a powerful tear jerker.
Today I am going to spotlight my article about the WWII mascot, Sgt Tippy because I have found and added a poem written by his buddies after he died.
I'm sorry that there weren't many folks at the horsecamp - there were plenty of folks here for the Hight school rodeo - you wouldn't believe some of the gorgeous horses - I'll post pictures later. I don't think gas stopped anyone here but then it's a competition and these kids have all been working hard.
I am really sorry about your medicine - that's much too long for you to go without it - I hope that the clinic can give you some pills until your presceiption comes in - that's really ashamed - I'm sorta in shock about that one.
Ok well I know you're enjoying your day with your family of pets - I don't know what we'd do with out ours here - they are such good company and you never feel alone when you have a sweet dog or kitty around. Salud.
I understand your frustration over the prescription situation. I think you should try and get your doctor to give you some sample packs to get you through. Missing one day is one thing but not that long.
I hope your weekend gets better.
and it took about 2.00 to fill your car, and you thought that was a lot. "Things have changed a lot in our lifetime. Take care of yourself, and get those people on the ball, you are needed by all of us here, and certainly by those animals that love you so much.
My phone is out but the line works as far as the computer so I can fix it for phoning the clinic tomorrow. My daughter sent me an e-mail and wants me to take her to the doctor. Her errands, getting the mail and going to the clinic for more extra pills makes using the gas worth while. I like to have three errands before I move the pickup.
I get my meds by mail because they let me have a three month supply at one time. It has worked very well up until now. This was a particularly bad time for it to foul up, because my doctor has just been replaced and I had to see the new one before I could get any new prescriptions.
Marsha - I did have a nice weekend. The sun came out, although it stayed cold. I'v been fired up to write articles all weekend.
