As I was poking around the web this morning, I got to reading some nutrition forums, and as I happened to be eating a bowl of cottage cheese at the moment, a thread regarding a cottage cheese diet caught my eye. I always get a kick out of seeing which new fad diet people are trying this week. I started reading the thread, and one poster started talking about cottage cheese being a cure for cancer.. WTH? This was something new to me, and it had to be some crackpot theory. I couldn't imagine what kind of idiot would believe that cottage cheese could cure cancer.
It said "add a tablespoon of Flaxoil into the blender, add teaspoon of honey, a little cayenne pepper and crushed pineapple and mix until smooth" This is called the "Budwig Diet" and it cures cancer".
I'm not some kind of health freak, by any means, and although I find it hard to believe that simple food choices can do something as miraculous as cure cancer, I know that eating the wrong things can really negatively affect your health.. raise your blood pressure and your cholesterol, block your arteries, and all kinds of not good things like that, so why would it be so far-fetched that eating the right foods could significantly affect your health in a positive way. I just find it hard to believe that cottage cheese could be some kind of miracle cure.
There have been many articles and news stories about the effects of so-called "superfoods" that are supposed to help you live longer, prevent cancer, etc...I found this list on WebMd.com

Ever since I first read this list, I've been very happy, because, with the exception of pumpkin and soy, I happen to love all of these foods, and eat them all regularly.. along with strawberries..which are packed with antioxidants and vitamin C.. and ohhhhh so yummy.. but for some reason didn't make this list.
So..back to the point of this article... Dr. Budwig recommends another approach to curing cancer, using flexseed oil in combination with cottage cheese. I did a search for the Budwig Diet and came up with many, many sources of information, and much of what I read, it turns out, are things I have been hearing about for years, but just never knew they came from Dr. Budwig's diet. Things like how flaxseed oil and omega 3 fatty acids (found highly in fish as well) are supposed to prevent cancer and other benefits. There are so many claims of "miracle cures".. just do this or that and prevent cancer or cure cancer or some other amazing health benefit.. garlic, vinegar, cayenne pepper.. to name just a few, it's hard to know what to believe. I found this video on YouTube about the benefits of flaxseed and thought it was interesting, if you want to check it out. benefits of flaxseed
The majority of the information I found, I took from this page http://www.cancertutor.com/Cancer/Budwig.html and I've cut and pasted a couple sections here for you, because it is a really long read with tons of information
"Dr Budwig was born in Germany in 1908. She passed away in 2003 at the age of 95. She has been referred to as a top European Cancer Research Scientist, Biochemist, Blood Specialist, German Pharmacologist, and Physicist. Dr Budwig was a seven-time Nobel Prize nominee. Germany in 1952 she was the Central Government's Senior Expert for fats and pharmaceutical drugs. She's considered one of the worlds leading authorities on fats and oils. Her research has shown the tremendous effects that commercially processed fats and oils have in destroying cell membranes and lowering the voltage in the cells of our bodies, which then result in chronic and terminal disease. What we have forgotten is that we are body electric. The cells of our body fire electrically. They have a nucleus in the center of the cell which is positively charged, and a cell membrane, which is the outer lining of the cell, is negatively charged. We are all aware of how fats clog up our veins and arteries, and are the leading cause of heart attacks, but we never looked beyond the end of our noses to see how these very dangerous fats and oils are affecting the overall health of our minds and bodies. Dr Budwig discovered that when unsaturated fats have been chemically treated that their unsaturated qualities are destroyed and the field of electrons removed. This Commercial Processing of fats destroys the field of electrons that the cell membranes (60-75 trillion) cells in our bodies must have to fire properly. The fats ability to associate with protein and thereby to achieve water solubility in the fluids of the living body---all this is destroyed. As Dr Budwig put it, "the battery is dead because the electrons in these fats and oils recharge it. When the electrons are destroyed the fats are no longer active and cannot flow into the capillaries and through the fine capillary networks. This is when circulation problems arise. Without the proper metabolism of fats in our bodies every vital function and every organ is affected. This includes the generation of new life and new cells. Our bodies produce over 500 million new cells daily. Dr Budwig points out that in growing new cells, there is a dipolarity between the electrically positive nucleus and the electrically negative cell membrane with it's high unsaturated fatty acids. During cell division the cell and new daughter cell must contain enough electron rich fatty acids in the cells surface area to divide off completely from the old cell. When this process is interrupted the body begins to die. In essence, these commercially processed fats and oils are shutting down the electrical field of the cells allowing chronic and terminal diseases to take hold of our bodies."
The article also states, that
"The lack of electron rich unsaturated fats affect;
Respiratory enzyme function It is basically proven that highly unsaturated fatty acids are the undiscovered decisive factor in achieving the desired effect of cellular respiratory stimulation.
All glands of the body
Brain Function- Including mental and spiritual
Scholastic performance of children
Function of the Heart- Proper firing of the heart
Marital infertility
Moral and behavior problems
Human sexual relationships
Cell division
Formation of tumors
Ingestion of wrong fats- Humans will eat six times their normal amount of food
Dr Budwig, in her book, also brought up the relationship between the Fats Syndrome, Electrons, Photons, and Solar Energy provided by the Sun."
This article talks about how Dr. Budwig also believed in the healing powers of the sun, and how our bodies need the sun. It's no secret that many people get depressed without regular exposure to sunlight.. me among them! So, making sure you get out into the sunlight when possible, could be very beneficial to your overall health.. Then again, too much sun causes wrinkles and skin cancer..so wear your sunblock.
" DR BUDWIG STRESSED THAT IT IS VERY IMPORTANT TO AVOID UNHEALTHY FOODS & SUBSTANCES such as hydrogenated fats, animal fats, sugar, white flour, preservatives, chemicals and processed foods. Avoid leftovers - food should be prepared fresh and eaten soon after preparation to get the health-giving electrons & enzymes-within 15-20 minutes. At least 3x a day drink a warm liquid, such as green or herbal teas, sweeten only with raw honey. Keep a food diary. Avoid stress and anxiety; take time to relax & enjoy each day. Listen to beautiful music, laugh, do deep breathing, connect with nature, and spend time with people you like. Dr Budwig spoke about the damaging effects of stress. "
I don't know if I could do the first part.. avoid animal fats, sugar, white flour, etc. These things are not new. Many people will tell you that preservatives, sugar, and white flour are deadly. But if you cut out sugar, white flour and all the things she recommends cutting out, what's left? vegetables and fruits? I'm not made to be a vegetarian. Cutting out all of these things may allow me to live to be 110, but who cares when it means cutting out half of the things I love to eat to do it. I keep trying to tell myself that I should eat healthier and cut out all the foods that are supposedly poisoning me slowly and sending me into an early grave, and that food is meant to be fuel and should not be looked at from a pleasure point of view. But food is a pleasure to me, and to most people. I"m not a huge meat eater, but I love the taste of a good steak, even though I feel guilty for eating our furry friends. It just tastes good. I love the taste of a moist, chocolately piece of cake slathered in buttercream frosting.. and the smooth, sweet creaminess of ice cream, and, to me, life is meant to be enjoyed. Maybe all things in moderatiion is the key here. Cut them down, not out. Then maybe I'll live to be 100 instead of 110.. but I'll die happy. On the other hand, I'm all for the last part.. avoidiing stress and anxiety, relax and enjoy each day, laugh.. etc.. sounds like great advice to me, and I already try to do these things as much as possible.
There is no shortage of diet and health information readily available on the internet, as well as in books and magazines, and a lot of it is contradictory. Who do you believe? What's the truth in all the hype? Wish I knew. Eat this.. don't eat that.. cleanse your colon.. don't cleanse your colon.. this food will prevent or cure cancer.. foods can't do that.. it all makes my head spin. You have to wonder when you read these claims about superfoods and magic cancer cure-alls, why, if natural foods and natural remedies can cure or prevent cancer, is cancer even a problem? Humans have been eating nuts and berries and veggies for eons. How far back in our history has cancer been a major concern? Is there truth and the key to good health in things like the Caveman Diet? Is it modern life and the ingestion of sugary, fatty foods and preservatives that's killing us?, Well, I don't know the answer to these questions at the moment. Maybe that's something to be explored in future articles, and I don't know whether Dr. Budwig's diet and combining flaxseed oil with cottage cheese truly cures cancer or prevents it, but to my way of thinking, it can't hurt!

I love my cottage cheese small curd, large curd it doesn't matter just plain and simple with nothing on it. Yummy!!
I love it too, Esther! I love both but I usually buy small curd.. and I usually eat it with fruit.. peaches or pineapple chunks usually.. sooo yummy.. but I eat it plain too.
Suze, I happen to LOVE soy! I drink Silk Light Vanilla Soy milk and it tastes like a vanilla milk shake....and the Silk Chocolate Milk is the most chocolatey milk you'll ever drink! Plus if you're making something like burgers or meatloaf, try taking away about 1/4-1/2 of the meat and replacing it with tofu instead. It will cut your calorie and fat intake, give you more energy, and taste EXACTLY the same! The tofu just takes on the taste of whatever you add it to.
I find things like this to be hard to believe. Who is Budwig and how is this person associated with this? I love cottage cheese BUT I don't think it can cure anything. Hard to believe. I'll keep eating it and hopefully I'll live a long life!
