Here are a selection of upcoming activities this Memorial Day weekend.
Nashville's Maifest is this weekend, Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25. Lots of bands, softball, Sunday's car show (cut-off 1979), free movies for kids, food, and more, at Memorial Park.
In Cahokia, the Midwest Regional Fly-In is this Saturday, May 24 at St Louis Downtown Airport. There will be free helicopter and plane rides for kids, for a fee for adults. There;ll also be a classic auto show, food, displays, and exhibits. A museum features a special exhibit commemorating the golden anniversary of the McDonnell-Douglas F-4 Phantom II built in St Louis.
Select Memorial Day services:
Lebaon. A ceremony honoring a local Civil War regiment made up of students, faculty, staff, and graduates of McKendree College, now McKendree University, is at noon Friday at College Gill Cemetery.
Belleville. Memorial Day parade starts at 10am Monday at cathedral Grade School.
Nashville. An outdoor service will be at Memorial Park at 11am. Guest speaker, Lt Col (ret) Scott Sharp, currently pastor First Baptist Church. Bring lawn chairs.
Granite City. Services Monday at 1pm at the Greater Granite City Area War memorial Park.
Highland. At 1pm Sunday at St Jacob Park, 2pm Sunday at Robinson cem near pocahontas, and 2pm Sunday at harris Cemetery near Alhambra.
O'Fallon. Ceremonies at 9am Monday at O'Fallon City cemetery. Guest speaker, Genia Meyer, mother of Brandon meyer, killed in Iraq.
Collinsville. Parade at 10:30 am Monday at Vandalia and Wickliffe, followed by a service at the VFW post home on Vandalia. A lunch follows, open to the public.
Fairview Heights. Services at 3pm Sunday at lake View Memorial Gardens for family and friends of all veterans along with a Fallen Heroes remembrance at 9am Monday for the family and friends of local combat casualties.
