- Nice clothes
- A strong resume
- A firm handshake
Step1
Prepare. You know you need to be ready, but how? Imagine every question they might ask you and prepare an answer. Think about all the experience you've ever had in life that would qualify you for this position. Convince yourself that you are the best person for this job, if you truly believe it, they will likely to agree.Remember to especially come armed with an answer to the dreaded "what is your greatest weakness," as this is their trick to test your honesty and quality at once. One good answer is "needing deadlines" (in a job you'll be expected to comply with them).
Step2
Dress for success.*Note, this does not mean over-dress. If you're going for an interview at Hot Dog on a Stick, a full suit and tie may be way too much.
Never wear jeans, Flip Flops or other overly-casual attire for an interview unless otherwise directed to. Even seemingly relaxed places like Guitar Center won't put up with this.
Step3
Bring your resume and your letters of recommendation. Always have these on hand, the fact that you sent them to the company already is irrelevant. Bringing these tools with you shows you are prepared and think ahead. Having these with you can provide you a reference point if you forget something during the interview and direct their questions toward your prior experience, making them easier on you to answer.Step4
Be ready to smile and shake hands. Many people underestimate the power of a firm (not too hard) handshake and a hefty smile. These show you're comfortable and confident. Try to do everything possible to keep your hand from sweating.Step5
Come equipped with a question or two about the job, this will show you are interested in the position and not afraid to ask for clarification.Make sure your question is educated for the job so you do not come off as uneducated about the job you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a part time job, do not prepare a question about benefits. However if you are applying for a technical job, asking what sort of a computer system the company uses would be relevant and will demonstrate you are taking the position seriously.
