Yesterday I had a young visitor in my garden.
My son came in the house screaming "Mom a baby bird fell out of the tree, Hurry come help it."
Of course I had to grab my new camera that I am learning to use. To my surprise it was a baby blue jay. You could hear the mother squawking
at us above and circling around. I knew that it was a matter of seconds before she started pecking at our heads. To my surprise she let us take photos of the baby then I thought I would pick it up and give it a lesson or two. Since she was being so nice. Why not test fate. But again she just sat in a tree and watched us.
After giving the baby a few flying lessons I placed it on top of the clothes line where she joined it as soon as I walked into the house. After a few minutes of sitting there with it she pushed it off the clothes line. Sorry I didn't give it enough lessons lol. It was the mothers turn to teach baby to fly. My camera and I needed something to practice close ups with. Oh did I get some good ones. I hope you enjoy!
Some people think that if a baby falls out of the tree that you can't place the nest back in the tree. That once it is touched by humans that they mother won't have anything to do with it. This isn't true. I have a good friend that is a wildlife rehabilitator and everything I did with the bird (flying lessons) I have seen her do with the babies that she gets.
If you do find a nestling bird (one that isn't
ready to fly) that has fallen from its nest because of a storm (not pushed out by mom).
Don't try to care for it, Put it back into the nest. If the nest has fallen try to put the nest back in the tree (a hot glue guns works great for this) First, examine the bird for injuries. If hurt, take it to a local veterinarian or call your local conservation department for the nearest wildlife rehabilitator. If it's a fledgling bird then you can place it on a tree limb or a clothes line like I did. In order to determine whether the bird is a nestling or a fledgling allow the baby birds to perch on your finger. If it is able to grip your finger firmly than it is a fledgling.
Our little friend was a fledgling.
See my images under my profile for many more photos of this beautiful bird!
