In a previous article, I noted a problem when WindowsXP SP3 is loaded on machines with AMD processors, most often noted on Hewlett Packard PCs. Today I got a link to the fix.
Jesper Johansson, the former senior security strategist at Microsoft and current Microsoft MVP who last week discovered the cause of the glitch, is offering a free tool that detects the problem and mitigates it. note: It must be run before installing SP3. Basically, the tool identifies AMD machines and checks to see if they're configured to load the Intel PPM driver.
The tool can be found here. This is a blog page containing a download link. When you click on it, it will save a VB Script (so some people with phishing filters, etc turned on may get a warning.)
Microsoft is still working on its hotfix version.
While there are a few other small problems reported with SP3, this was the problem of major concern in the consumer space. The blog mentions the other reported issues as well.

Improved WPA2 support (if someone is using wireless) is the one reason I'm going to upgrade some systems now.
