I sometimes write for Helium. I don't know how many of you are familiar with that site, but topics are selected, written on, and then rated by the other writers. If you are rated high enough, you can actually make money. Though not a lot, you can make money over time even if you don't win any contests.
I don't choose to write and give the copyrights and all other rights away. But I do enter the contests now and then. Recently, I wrote an article which I also posted here about euthanasia. In this article, I compared the practice to the practice of abortion. To me, they are the same.
Today I received an email from Helium telling me that another writer had some feedback for me. Now, I thought it would be that I had a typo or something like that. I read many articles and most of them have typos or the whole article is written in one long paragraph. There are other problems too. I try to be careful, but I am bound to make a mistake now and then. After all, I'm only human.
Well the email said that I had written something that was UNETHICAL. I couldn't imagine what as I only wrote according to the issues listed on the contest. Yesterday, I wrote on Home-schooling. I know I didn't write anything unethical there.
So then I read what she actually said that she claimed made my article unethical. She said, "This isn't about abortion, trying to sneak it in detracts from your article."
First of all, I would like to tell her that she should have put either a period or semi-colon in her sentence. Using a comma is incorrect.
Second of all, I wasn't trying to sneak it in. I plainly said it. I used the word a couple of times in my analogy of the two practices; showing that I believe they are the same. Just because one is practiced on the unseen doesn't change the fact that it is the decision to terminate a life just as the terminating of an old person or one in pain, or one in a so-called vegetative state.
If she disagrees, that's one thing. But to accuse me of being unethical, of trying to sneak it in makes me angry. I would like for her to know that I will not change what I said. I will not be intimidated. It's too bad that site doesn't allow posting articles and opinions as does this one. I could send her a private email, but that's not possible either.
So I am venting here. Thanks to all of you for listening. Even if you don't agree with what I said about euthanasia.
