Obama received the best opportunity to tie John McCain to George Bush and the chance to do so was offered by non other than the president himself.
Mr. Bush has almost become irrelevant in the political scene lately. The media is ignoring him completely (nothing he does will surprise them) and John McCain is very happy about that. Every time he opens his mouth, he gives Obama the opportunity to link the two of them. John McCain opened his speech by explicitly saying "the challenges we face" after George Bush's administration, implying the mess we have to clean up after that guy. He takes every opportunity to distance himself from his policies and words.
So in an attempt to keep his presidency relevant, Bush injected himself in 08 politics. The venue his chose was very poor. In front of a supportive audience at the Israeli Knesset, Bush went after the target du jour. He attempted to mock those who "believe we should negotiate with the terrorists and radicals, as if some ingenious argument will persuade them they have been wrong all along." This was a direct low blow to Obama, who last July said he supported direct talks with the leaders of Iran and North Korea, among others. Note that Senator Obama is talking about having talks with officials, head of states of countries not terrorist organizations like Hamas. Unless Mr. Bush has moved his "axis of evil" to the terrorists group, he obviously is APPEASING the Israelis, and terrorizing the Americans.
The Obama campaign naturally jumped on this Christmas gift. He was assisted by Senators Biden (who called it Bullsh*t), Clinton, the DNC, and the entire DNC gang. This is one issue they want Bush to bring up short an international escalation. John McCain was talking about his 2013 dreams without offering specific plan on how to reach the goals. It did not matter. Bush's comment undercut his message and made the news of day. McCain can't be about that.
The republicans want to insist that Bush is not on the ballot and the democrats have no other argument than "Bush Sucks." That would work if Dubya was cooperating and kept his mouth shut. Unfortunately he is not. Every time he speaks about Obama, directly or indirectly, he gives them the occasion to highlight his policy failures for at least the ensuing 48 hours, and they hammer McCain = Bush third term.
Let's skip the fact that the Nazi appeaser Dubya was talking about was a conservative republican from Idaho, Senator William Borah. Of course he would not tell that to the Israelis.
Keep talking Mr. BUSHED!

The media runs with ANYTHING they can get their hands on.
Wonder why they are so biased against the republicans?
Pro democratic and simple minded when it comes to the truth.
Shame on us for ONLY listening to the US media!
Try some broadcasts from the BBC or better yet, Radio Havana Cuba!
Talk about blowin your hair back!
Good article Jared!
This would be funny if it wasn't so...naive.
Wake up. We talked to Libya, negotiated with them to abandon their nuclear ambition. We talk to Iran regularly. The only nuance here is presidency level talk. What's the big deal? Presidential prestige.
Do your homework. We are talking to IRAN, right now!
The reality is we are talking to Iran for example. The only debate here is president to president level talk. Hillary says there should be preparation. Lower level staff should talk first. If Barack were president, his advisers would have told him that. I don't care about the protocole. Staff first, president later, that is not important to me John Q. All I know is we need to talk to our friends often, and talk to our enemies every now and then. Without talks there is no diplomacy. How do we solve the problems?
John McCain's solution: Bomb, Bomb, Bomb Iran. You don't need to talk first and bomb later. Just BOMB
This has to be Cheney's doing. I can't imagine Bush is smart enough to write his own speeches.
This is a glimpse of the Republican presidential campaign. The only thing they have to offer is fear itself. Damn, we've been down this road before. How many times do we have to get burned to learn our lesson?
We already voted twice for the evil, vilified Democrat with disastrous consequences.
