Hewlett Packard has confirmed that PC/Laptop owners with AMD processors should hold off on installing the WindowsXP SP3. This applies to Home, Pro, and Media Center Editions of that operating system. Rumours have been circulating in the channel (OEM, Builder, Integrator, Consultant) for a while but the official documents were released this afternoon.
A problem has been found with a missing registry key related to images first installed as SP1 (and early SP2) that may cause the machine to endlessly reboot and/or suffer an error followed by a BSOD (Blue Screen of Death).
Though this seems to be an HP/Compaq problem according to most reports, there are a few mentions of this with IBM and Dell machines as well.
If you lost your original paperwork and want to know what kind of processor you have, click START, then CONTROL PANEL. If you are in category view select PERFORMANCE & MAINTENANCE, then SYSTEM [if you are in classic view, select SYSTEM]. The lower right of the 1st tab (General) will tell you if you have an "Intel" or "AMD" chipset.
It sounds like HP plans to have a fix out soon.
If you have already run the SP3 update and are experiencing problems, Here is the article from HP detailing how to reverse the problem.
