An inviting time
Of gentle breezes
Beside a canal,
Feet dangling over
An ancient stone wall,
Hungry, eager ducks
Rasping their demand
For the bread you drop
Past your sun-warmed knees
Into upturned beaks,
On glistening backs,
And blue-green ripples
Maneuvered by them
With their clever feet
To swim in circles
And keep sight of you;
You click your shoe soles
And crumple the bag
As if they will know
Your store is now closed--
And you glance my way
With laughing blue eyes
And beguiling smile;
You rise for a stroll
And pull me by your side,
A willing partner
In an adventure
On a gravel path
That lines the water
For a little way,
Then veers into trees
Rustling foliage
Like crinoline cloth,
Lighted and shifting
Enthralling dapples
On the fragrant mulch,
All titillation
Of wind on our skins,
Scents in our noses,
Delight to our eyes,
Soughing in our ears,
Tastes of mystery
To unravel here
With its denizens
And especially,
What's past the last tree,
Beyond what's been found
This inviting day.
