I work in IT ... but I focus on Windows, Unix, Linux, FreeBSD, or Solaris on PC architecture. Supporting that, I know a lot of sites that feature open source software.
For anyone not familiar with "open source", this is community developed and supported software. It is made available free of charge to users, though applications based on open source code (example: a home inventory program that is built on MySQL database) may ask for or require a fee. I know many people using OpenOffice, a MS Office alternative, and many other applications very effectively. Well developed applications from this community can save computer users a lot of money and provide serious computing power.
Less familiar with Macs, I was happy to find this site containing open source software for Mac systems.
I'm posting the link in case it helps someone else.

I must say that XP has grown on me, and I'm less familiar than I used to be with Mac's (my wife has a powerbook; I was an all-Mac guy up until 10 years ago when corporate America made me give them up).
I like open source software a lot, and have been using OpenOffice as a crossplatform suite, especially when I can't afford another copy of MS Office. And I really hate Word. It is fine for simple documents, but I write very complex docs (not docx, either!) that have to meet strict Federal requirements, and Word drives me bananas the way figures can move around in bizarre ways, instead of staying properly anchored to text, or even disappear outside the margins, remaining in a file but hard to find. I find the programming pathetic, not to mention that XP Home would lock up with complex docs all the time (I don't use that computer any more, and have XP Pro on everything else).
Anyway, I appreciate the link and the chance to rant. I'm always impressed by IT professionals. Best wishes!
