The use of anti-aging skin care products these days is on the increase and all things considered it is perfectly natural; reducing the visible signs of aging is the goal for many people as they grow older, and why shouldn't it be? We achieve this with beauty products that synthesize the production of the protein collagen; approximately one quarter of the protein contained in skin is collagen. Collagen is a member of another family of substances that aid in reducing the signs of ageing. this group is called antioxidants which are natural chemicals found in many foods and our body.
Probably the best known of these anti-oxidants is vitamin C although no-one really knows just how much we should have each day. The problem with vitamin C derived skin care treatments is they can become oxidized when exposed to the atmosphere, often even before they are used.
Other skin care treatments which mimic the effects of vitamin C are being tried all the time which are hoped to be more stable in the atmosphere and also cheaper to produce. Although these products are good, they cannot actually compare with vitamin C but fortunately vitamin E and alpha-lipoic acid are also anti-oxidants so can be used to gain the same effect.
The body uses vitamin E as an antioxidant and to increase the natural defense we have against sickness; it has many functions including inhibiting the formation of cancer cells. Lipoic acid is also an energy making component of the body, found in every cell; it is also known to combat the signs of aging very effectively by repairing skin damage caused by the aging process.
Phytochemicals aren't produced by the body but are extracted from a number of plants and used in many anti-aging skin care products to combat the signs of ageing. A further benefit of these phytochemicals is their ability to prevent the onset of certain cancers; for example:
*Prostate Cancer
*Cancer that attacks the Breast
*Colon Cancer
These are all on the increase around the world.
Some B-vitamins like B5, B6 and B12 are also in use for anti-aging skin care products (like anti-wrinkle creams). The field of anti-aging skin care products is vast and needs a great deal more research. A great deal about the aging process has already been learned and the products available today are already far more advanced than ten years ago; there is still a long way to go however, before methods that successfully reduce the effects of age are commonplace.
Hopefully, these challenges will get resolved in due course and better and cheaper anti-aging skin care products will be produced. However, man-made skin care regimes should be used only as a supplement; it is doubtful if science can replace natural skin care remedies. Drinking plenty of water, getting a good night's sleep, exercising regularly, maintaining healthy eating habits and keeping stress at bay are an essential means of delaying the aging process.
