Friday and Saturday nights are usually spent at home watching a dvd rental that our entire family can enjoy together. Finding quality movies to keep different age groups entertained can sometimes be tricky, so when I find a worthy film I like to tell my friends about it.
Tonight we watched a cute film called 'Dan in Real Life' and it stars Steve Carell, Juliette Binoche, Dane Cook, John Mahoney & Dianne Wiest. There are some great younger stars in this film too and the bonds created while making this movie are very apparent. I feel that if you watch this movie you'll want to spend more time with your own family or schedule that much needed family reunion! The first thing I want to mention about this movie is that the music throughout fits the changing moods of the film perfectly. A Norwegian singer-songwriter by the name of Sondre Lerche composed most of the music and if you watch the film through the credits (please do!), you'll see her there.
The movie is about a newspaper advice columnist who is a widowed father of three girls, all with very different and cute personalities that I'm sure most of you can relate to. They all take a road trip to his parents house in Rhode Island to spend time with family. He ends up at a bookstore all alone and if I tell you what happens there, I'll be giving away the plot.
Back at home, Dan's entire family spends a lot of time doing things that really warm your heart. Despite all the fun times, Dan ends up spending the majority of his vacation in turmoil. This of course is entertaining because he expresses his feelings in true Steve Carell style. There's quite a few moments in the film where you just want to give him a hug and other times where you'd like to shake him.
Nothing in the movie felt forced, it was obvious that the cast spent a lot of time getting to know each other to ensure that the audience felt like they were right there with the antics and growth.
I watched this film with my husband who actually never cares about movies, my 6 year old son and our toddler. My oldest son is at his Grandma house for the weekend, Rylan wasn't watching it because he's a baby and was more interested in tossing popcorn all over my floor and Alex fell asleep about 3/4 of the way through it. My husband WAS interested in it though and I thought it was a really cute flick.
