I don't know a single person who actually wants to see the new Speed Racer movie that opened in theaters this weekend. Ever since the ads came out, the general opinion of most people is 'What the hell?' With its odd colors and cartoonish look, the whole thing looks like a mess. Once the mainstream critics got ahold of it, they weren't too nice about it.
On top of all that, this PG-rated movie is supposed to be family friendly, yet it runs 2 hours and 15 minutes! My mother-in-law was going to take her four grandchildren (ages 3-5) to see it, but decided not to even bother because she knows they won't sit still for something that long.
According to BoxOfficeMojo.com, this movie made a pitiful $5.8 million on Friday, meaning it will be lucky to clear a total of $20 million for the whole weekend. For a movie that cost well over $100 million to produce, that means somebody is going to lose money on this movie. Right now, people are still going to see Iron Man, and the new Indiana Jones movie is right around the corner.
Now that the 2008 summer movie season has kicked off, we've already got the first big budget bomb. Oh well, at least there won't be a Speed Racer 2.
