Don't eat when you're angry, sad, scared, or anxious. These emotions all shut down digestion. When you are emotionally out of balance, it is better not to eat at all. When we eat sugar, our immune system can be depressed for up to six hours. This is the exact same effect as when we're angry. Next time you're feeling poorly, don't reach for that doughnut. It could have consequences for the rest of your day!
For some people, food and stress go hand in hand. If your relaxation routine involves eating an entire quart of ice cream or a whole bag of cookies, try some simple alternatives: Get away from your kitchen and other places that you normally associate with food. Take a walk or call a friend on the telephone. Both activities will help elevate your mood, and they won't add unhealthy calories to your diet.
