On Saturday May 3, 2008 Sargeant Stephen Liczbinski was murdered while responding to a bank robbery in progress. The 39 year old Sargeant was shot with a assault weapon. When he confronted the bank robbers. These three men wore traditional muslim female garb to rob the bank. And to conceal weapons that would be used in the robbery. Srgt. Liczbinski leaves a wife and three children. He would have been 40 years old on last Tuesday.
In the following days during there pursut of the third and final suspect a Eric Floyd 33 of Philadelphia. There was another shooting involving three other young men. Who were brutally beaten by more than a dozen officers.  Officials said more than a dozen officers would be taken off the street as authorities investigate, and Police Commisioner Charles Ramsey said police needed to maintain a high standard of conduct despite the tensions. Last night the Commisioner reported to the news media that six of the officers had been identified. Futher investigation is still ongoing.
Last night they caught the suspect, Eric Floyd 33 of Philadelphia.  Floyd was the third and final suspect wanted for a bankrobbery and murder of police officer Sargeant Stephen Liczbinski.  Floyd who went to a family members home dressed in traditional female muslim garb. He was arrested. The police had to wait untill the went to the station to get Sargeant Stephen Liczbinski's handcuffs. Seem that this is a time honored tradition with the Philadelphia Police. Floyd arrived locked in the handcuffs of the slain sergeant, a 12-year veteran and married father of three Police Commissioner Charles Ramsey said."It's a way of just paying tribute to the slain officer," Ramsey said.  Seems that this is classic protocol for the Philadelphia police to do this as a symbol of the slain officers last arest.
Another suspect Howard Cain, 33 was shot and killed after the robbery was refused burial services.
The managing director of an area mosque said its leaders refused to conduct funeral services for a bank robber accused in the shooting death of a Philadelphia police officer.Tariq El Shabazz said the Germantown Masjid does not want "one slight scintilla hinting that we condone his behavior."A friend of 33-year-old Howard Cain's family asked if Cain's burial could take place at the mosque, according to El Shabazz. Cain was one of three suspects in the death of Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski. The officer was shot when he confronted suspects in a northeast Philadelphia bank robbery on Saturday.Two suspects are in custody, and Cain was shot by police after the robbery. l Shabazz says in Islam, "you don't rob people or transgress against them or commit murder. On all three grounds they are dead wrong."

I think the shooting of a police officer is a tragedy. But I think that beating suspects is not a good reaction for the police. Another article at Gather today suggested that the police need to be in counseling after losing one of their own. I tend to agree. Perhaps then they will be less agressive.
