Well here's something that happened last night just to show you that the elderly can be funny. I work on the hall with the Alzheimers patients and the combative ones, you know the ones that will pop you in the head in a second.
We have (or had) a man and wife sharing a room up until a couple of weeks ago when the husband passed away.....which by the way the first people there were CNA's that were off work. They had family there too but only a few.
Last night the lady's sister who is also in the nursing home and i take care of was out visiting which she seldom does, driving her wheelchair and eating her ice cream. Her name is Louise and some people call her Princess because she acts like one. Not demanding but proper and always trying to weasel us into letting her stay in bed for supper. It doesn;t work but you gotta give her an A for Effort.
Anyway she stopped in to her sisters room to drop off her ice cream and told her there was a really handsome guy that took care of her and she wouldn't mind having him for a brother in law. Ok this sent the lady that just lost her husband into fits of laughter and she had to call the nurses station to tell them what happened.
Tommy is another one that is on my section and he has to have something every five minutes no matter what the time or how busy we are. People are afraid to say anything because he tells his mom and she raises hell most of the time about him not getting the proper care. These people don't understand that the people that live here are just people, they really want to be treated like anybody else or most of them do. Last night I was helping with Tommy's room mate and he (like always) needed something. I asked him what he wanted and he asked who the nurse was. I told him I was filling in for the nurse and I could do whatever he wanted her to do. He told me I was full of crap which I get told alot. I told him I could even give him and enema because the shop vac was parked right outside the door....The girl I was working with almost dropped her jaw to the floor. All Tommy did was laugh, I told her she had to loosen up or these peope would drive her crazy. they are just people.
A lot of the CNA'a that fill in on our hall would like to be down there all the time because we get out work done but we have fun too and it beats the hell out of having these people sit here and pay no attention to them. I walk by anyone that I know and always grab their hand or stick out my tongue and always get a good laugh.
I have some favorites and I know when something happens to them it will make me want to quit again but I know I won't, I even miss them on my days off thinking about if they are getting taken care of like they should be. When I get back I get smiles and hugs and there are some that bitch constantly but they are cool too they have their moments.
