Cloverfield is a rare modern day monster movie

I didn't know what to expect from Cloverfield either. I enjoyed the movie as well.

I disagree......I thought it was a mediocre film.........a sort of "Blair Witch Project Meets Godzilla" kind of a movie........Most of it was too dark to really see anything.......and the party sequence at the beginning went on way too long.........There was never any real explanation about where the monster came from (other than a brief mention of an "earthquake" in New York Harbor maybe).
I actually enjoyed the "Behind-The-Scenes" part of the DVD more than the movie itself. And I am not being sarcastic. The "Making Of Cloverfield" and the "Cloverfield Visual Effects" portions were very interesting (I've never seen so much green screen in my entire life!!)
But, as for the movie itself, I sure didn't care for the ending (nothing like leaving everything wide open in case this one grosses enough to produce a sequel). On a scale from one to ten, I would give it a five (or maybe even a six). And that would be just for the visual effects (because they were the only thing that really saved this movie from bankrupting the studio).

If you watch very closely in the last scene while they are on the ferris wheel, you will see way off in the distance where the creature came from - outer space. Watch closely and you'll see something fall out of the sky and hit the water.

Thanks Bill. I have heard some good things about this movie. I've waited to see it until it came out on DVD because it didn't quite look quite THAT good to me in the adverts. As BERF mentions above, 'Blair Witch Project' meets 'Alien', etc. I can only tolerate hand-held action sequences for a short time.

But the premise sounds excellent...and there hasn't been a really good monster movie in a very long time.
