When my children were born, I thought I wouldn't let them watch TV. We didn't even have cable at the time, so it was not hard to go without the television. With this pregnancy, I have let them watch a lot more than I would otherwise.
We just watch PBS shows. "Word World" and "Super Readers" are the two favorites. And I've noticed since they've started watching these shows, they've been more interested in learning their letters. They'll even pretend to mix together the magnetic letters on the fridge to make words!
What are your thoughts on children watching television? I would have thought it really negative before this pregnancy, but now I've seen a lot of benefits. How much TV do you let your kids watch, and what show?

I think that the educational shows are good but in no way should they be used as a babysitter for children at any age. I think of it as an addition to what I already try to teach him.
She's allowed movies that I view and consider appropriate..I don't think she even misses it...She finds other things to occupy her time now.
We didn't get cable until I was nearly a teenager. But my mom made sure we balanced our t.v. schedule. We had to watch so much educational programming a week. But though we watched t.v., we still played outside. And made sure we did our homework first. Not sure all parents nowadays pay attention to that.
At 3 & 4 I let them watch Noggin, The Learning Channel cartoons (like Hi-5 and Peep), and PBS. Oh, and an occasional Magic Schoolbus episode, they were just a little old for her but she still enjoyed them. Now that she's six she has outgrown some of the younger-focused shows but gets more out of Magic Schoolbus and shows like Between the Lions, Sesame Street, Word World. She has never been one to sit for long periods of time, and doesn't sit and watch whole episodes every day, just bits here and there. More if she doesn't feel that well. I've always been very choosy about what's on and preference is definitely given to ones with educational content. So I'm comfortable with the content and length of time she spends. I view T.V. like a lot of tools, it's all in how you use it.
The only other thing he watches is basketball on tv with his dad.
That's it for us, and it seems to work well.
