My daughter was driving a 1994 Nissan Maxima that was only getting 13 mpg. Since she's going off to college, I decided to get her a more fuel-efficient car. She learned to drive a manual transmission when she first started driving but hasn't driven one in years. She loved the 2004 Toyota Corolla we found on the dealer's lot, so we made a good deal for it and brought it home. Now she's afraid to drive it. She bursts into tears every time she tries to drive it and it stalls.
Anyone have suggestions on helping her learn to drive this car?

What I think is happening and happened to me is she is in 3rd gear, not in 1st gear....so it stalls out. Shifting to the different gears too soon could do this too. Usually you can hear the motor whine when you need to up shift..( When we had stick shift cars I would be able to shift to the next gear without even using the clutch.)
Maybe if you help her get it in first gear....it will help give her confidence and clue her into the engine sounds and see the speedometer for when she should up shift.
The owners manual should have the speeds she should be going when she shifts, also the Toyota dealership can give you this information too!
Good luck!
Let me know how you make out helping her.
