And even amongst individuals, you really can't be sure whether you're reading a paid review or not. There are actually services that coordinate paid reviews for bloggers and advertisers, acting as the middleman.
As far as getting the word out about your blog, if you target long tail keywords (keywords with a low amount of competition, usually consisting of several words/a phrase), and optimize for those, and get links to your article on your blog, you should start getting some traffic from the search engines.
All this could cover a book though :-)
1 - It helps establish yourself as an expert on the chosen topic of your blog. As your blog becomes more popular you will become the place to go for information on your topic - you become the authority.
2 - It allows you to have an open dialogue with your readers through the comments field. This is far better than one way communication because it allows you to see what your readers want to know and think about.
