I have a question....does anyone sign?

I just started to teach myself the sign language. I found that there are many different signs for the same word. It is complex and difficult, but I am still going to go forth and learn it.

I especially enjoy it during worship time. I am a very expressive person.

So, if you know sign, can I use any of the same signs for the same word? Does it matter if it is old or a new version of the ASL?

We sign, we have a daughter who is deaf. And it depends on who you are talking to. Usually there is a casual version and a more formal version. Just like when speaking Spanish or French. There is a "slang" version of some words. It really is difficult. And some people have "house signs" meaning our word for chicken might be different than yours. Sign language is really complex. You don't sign exact English, usually it is a little backwards. Good luck! There are a lot of information on the web!

I dated a guy who was deaf and was learning sign from him, but I forgot much of it. He was a real sweetheart, but came on too fast and scared me off.... :-P

Juley, thank you. My friend is deaf. But, I only see her for a few minutes on Sunday. She fine tunes my sign. I have such a passion to learn it. I love it. I have learned the alphebet and about 200 words for simple sentences. I was just getting a bit confused as the web and my two books vary so much on the same words.

Haven't done it in years. I learned the alaphabet for a merit badge, while I was a kid and in the boyscouts. But that is along time ago and I forgot most of it.

I think usually its okay to use the relaxed versions..We were teaching our daughter the relaxed version and then her hearing was restored...Now I'm working with a child who can't communicate well and am recognizing some of the signing she does to me..Never hurts to brush up I guess! Its good to learn formal and relaxed in case you find yourself in a situation where it would be more proper to speak formally...thats just my opinion but I myself plan on brushing up on both and continuing to teach our daughter..

Heather, yes it does touch the heart and soul while worshiping God. I guess, teaching myself, I will just have to pick one of the signs and hope that is the right one. Thanks for sharing with me.

My 13 year old son did not learn to talk until he was 3, so they had us teach him to sign to communicate (which meant we had to learn too) - I mostly know a bunch of signs for food and drink and the alphabet.

It's a web based class designed by a professional ASL teacher.
