Socrates was a distinguished Greek philosopher. The son of a sculptor, and for some time followed that calling himself. He also spent time serving in the army.
Returning to Athens he devoted himself to study and began to exhort the people on public questions and the conduct of life.
In 406 BC he was made one of the Senate of Five Hundred, and had other honors bestowed on him. Yet he continued teaching in addition to performing his civic duties. One of his students was Plato.
Not long afterwards Anytus charged him with impiety and he was found guilty and sentenced to death.
When the fatal day came Socrates calmly drank the poison which terminated his career and his life.

I've written a couple of lenses on Squidoo... Why Squidoo? and I'm a Lensmaster! What Now? which will give a good outline of all things Squid.
In the other corner is How HubPages Works and How to Hub. The difference between the first and the second of each is the first is like getting a brochure of the car and finding out the features and benefits. The second in the series is getting behind the wheel and giving it a test drive.
I then do a comparison! Hubpages vs Squidoo.
All in all the ways of the Squid and the Hub are a little more complicated than Gather. But both have some very powerful features that go in a different direction than Gather.
I've even written some articles on the benefits of using Gather.
There's links in each of those articles that people can use to sign up and I get credit for it.
I read your article about gather, and I really appreciate your idea about giving a short summary of an article with a link if someone's interested in learning more rather than a fraction of the article and then a link continuing the article on another site. That always seemed cheap to me. And blatant self-promotion.
You've given me a lot to think about. If I need help, can I contact you? I'm still very much an internet neophyte.
P.S. I still love my book cover. Too bad I haven't found a publisher yet.
I get a lot of good feedback at both HubPages and Squidoo with people thanking me and asking questions. If they were fake accounts made by me I'd be too busy 'shilling' to have the time to continue writing all these "How To" articles :-)
Any questions you have, just contact me via my hubpages or squidoo. I tend to get a LOT of impersonal messages through Gather so I may accidentally overlook a legitimate one. I love questions from internet neophytes because it allows me to see problems (and solutions) from a different viewpoint.

Doyle I <~~~~~
