Here's a great tip for clothing your children during the recession. Moms2Moms Sales are a great way to clothe your children without breaking your budget. Children grow so quickly that they rarely wear out their clothes, especially the special occasion outfits.
A Moms2Moms sale is a cross between a flea market & a garage sale. Moms rent tables, usually in school gym or church social hall, where they can sell gently-used clothing, toys, and miscellaneous items that their families have outgrown. It's an excellent source for stroller, cribs, high chairs, toys and all kinds of large baby equipment. It's important for shoppers to know which models and brands have been recalled. The US Consumer Product Safety Commission is an excellent resource for checking recalled items: http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/category/child.html
At Moms2Moms sales, moms sell items, usually at steep discounts, to clear out their kids' closets and make a few bucks. In turn, those same moms and the public can shop at these sales and find incredible bargains - clothing that is slightly used, but in good condition. Some clothes still have the tags on them! You can get name-brand clothing at a fraction of what it costs brand-new!
These sales can be found every spring and fall at numerous churches, schools, and even daycare centers.
In 1993, I was one of a group of six founding mothers who put together one of the first Moms2Moms sales in Oakland County, Michigan. The sales are still wildly popular. Attendance has topped out at over 800 shoppers! At 50¢ per admission, (kids free) we'd made $400 before anyone even shopped.
A Moms2Moms sale is both a fundraiser and a service to the community. We included a bake sale, coffee, and lunch items such as pizza by the slice. Feeding the shoppers keeps them at the sale longer.
Buying gently used clothing, toys and baby equipment makes sense any time, not just during recessions. When I snagged a $120 Rothschild dress coat for my daughter for only $5, I was hooked. I was able to purchase beautiful, brand name clothing at rock bottom prices. When it was outgrown, I often sold it for slightly more than I had paid.
If you would like to start a Moms2Moms sale at your school, church or community center, I have sample forms. I will also be glad to answer questions.
