My son was bitten...

May 02, 2008 01:15 AM EDT
As my son was taking a shower.  I head a very loud scream.  I said what is wrong with you.  He said I just got bit by a spider.  So I rushed into his bathroom to check on him and see if I could get a good look at that mean, bad spider.  You know one of those things Mothers get the honor of doing.  So I get in the bathroom and he is trying to cover himself up.  But is very upset about the bite and telling me that it was a spider and its right there.  He said I killed it.  I look on the shower wall and what do I see but a tick crawling away.
So what had happen was my son saw it on his leg while taking a shower.  He pulled it off and thought that was when he was bitten.  The tick had some of my sons skin in his mouth.  I told my son it was a tick.  He said well it has 8 legs thats a spider in my book.  And he said it hurt like a spider.  I told him to never pull one off like that again.  Next time (and hopefully there wouldn't be a next time) to let me know and we would use tweezers to pull it off.
I picked up the tick with a tissue and put it in a bag.  Then I dated the bag and wrote down the location of the bite on the bag (these are things the doctor will need to know, in case of swelling or if the area turns red).  Next I headed into the kitchen and found a glass bottle with a lid and put the whole bag tick and all into it and closed the lid (don't want that darn thing to get out and bite someone else).

So what should you do when you find a tick on your body attached or not?

If you've received a tick bite:

  1. Remove the tick promptly and carefully. Use tweezers to grasp the tick near its head or mouth and pull gently to remove the whole tick without crushing it.
  2. If possible, seal the tick in a jar and keep it for a week or two. Your doctor may want to see the tick if you develop symptoms of illness after a tick bite.
  3. Use soap and water to wash your hands and the area around the tick bite after handling the tick.
  4. Call your doctor if you aren't able to completely remove the tick.
Don't forget Number 3 is very important even if you weren't the one bitten by the tick.  You can get the diseases that a tick carries from just handling the tick.

See your doctor if you develop:

  • A rash
  • A fever
  • Muscle aches
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Swollen lymph nodes
  • Flu-like symptoms

This is a photo of my sons spider (I think he knows what a tick looks like now).

If possible, bring the tick with you to your doctor's appointment.

What Diseases could a tick carry?
A tick could carry, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever.
A tick could also carry Lyme Disease

Symptoms

The first symptoms of RMSF may include

  • Moderate to high fever, which can persist for 2 to 3 weeks if the infection is untreated
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Severe headache
  • Deep muscle pain
  • Significant tiredness
  • Chills
  • Lack of appetite

You should watch your kid (or whoever was bitten) for days to weeks to a couple of months after the bite.  You want to watch for a fever, for a red-spotted rash, which often starts as small, flat, pink, non-itchy spots on your wrists, forearms, and ankles. These spots turn pale when you apply pressure. They eventually become raised on your skin. In the late stages of the illness, skin tissue begins to die and turn black – thus the original local name "black measles." A few people with RMSF never develop a rash.

Some people develop additional symptoms later in the disease, including rash on the palms of their hands or soles of their feet, abdominal pain, joint pain, and diarrhea.

Now for Lyme Disease

Signs and Symptoms

Lyme disease can affect the skin, joints, nervous system, and other organ systems. Symptoms, and their severity, can vary from person to person.

 lymedisease_illustration

Rash. A small, red bump may appear within a few days to a month, often at the site of the tick bite — often in your groin, belt area or behind your knee. It may be warm to the touch and mildly tender. Over the next few days, the redness expands, forming a rash that may be as small as a dime or as large as 12 inches across. It often resembles a bull's-eye, with a red ring surrounding a clear area and a red center. The rash, called erythema migrans, is one of the hallmarks of Lyme disease, affecting about 70 percent to 80 percent of infected people. If you're allergic to tick saliva, redness may develop at the site of a tick bite. The redness usually fades within a week. This is not the same as erythema migrans, which tends to expand and get redder over time.

Flu-like symptoms. A fever, chills, fatigue, body aches and a headache may accompany the rash.

Ok so now for the next month or two I have to visit my son while he is in the shower and look all over his body for rashes and red areas.
Sounds like so much fun.
He has been bitten before when he was younger.  He made out fine that time.  Hope he does this time.

ick ick ick. . you have me itching now. Ticks creep me out. My brother had one crawling on him about a week ago, luckily he got it before it had a chance to bite him. I hope your son is ok, I remember the first (and only) time I have been bit by one, I ran screaming out of the bathroom in a panic (I don't handle bugs very well), I bet he was a lot more calm about it than I was.

Amy that was a great article. Informative, and correct all the way round. I was a nurse for 18 years, and I have to say I could not have explained it any better. Now I am starting a pest control business. Deer ticks are smaller than the American Dog Tick. The deer tick carries Lymes, and the American Dog Tick carried Rocky Mountian spotted fever. You may want to have a pest control comopany come out and do an outdoor treatment for prevention. Also if you have high grass, and weeds around your property, cut it back, make sure to wear a repellent.

Exculsion is the best way to keep those things away.

I always heard you weren't supposed to just pull them out... that it can "decapitate" the tick, and leave it's head under the flesh. I have always been told (and my family does this in ND) that you're supposed to light a match, blow it out, and while it's still hot... put it close enough for the tick to feel the heat (but not touch it)... and that will make them "unlatch."

ewww..yer making me feel skeevy thinking about bugs crawling on me.. LOL we have bugs around here that my dogs used to pick up all the time until I put some Advantage on them.. I don't know if they were ticks, but they would attach themselves to them and I'd have to pull them off. I thought they might be ticks, and I know you're not supposed to pull them off, but luckily I always managed to get the whole thing, head intact, so I figured it was not a big problem. This is great info.. very helpful!

I'm sorry your son was bitten and I hope he's all right. Thanks so much for the information and the photos. I've heard about Lyme Disease in our area but being a transplant city kid, never knew what a tick looked like. According to the billboard advertisement on the expressway, they look about 5 foot long by 3 feet wide so I've never been really sure how big or small they are. The photo of the tick in the baggie gives a good reference to actual size. Thank you!

Good information here for those that are not familiar with ticks and their removal. Being a geocacher, I end up with a lot of ticks, even using deet. I have gotten numerous bites in the last 4 years, but never contracted Lyme. The CDC has Lyme pretty well under control in my area. You did the right thing though and definitely need to monitor the bite area.

This is great info, - I am so afraid of ticks.......they are kinda hard to find on your body. Several years ago I pulled one from my scalp, thinking is was a scab on my head, I nearly freaked out when I saw it was a tick! I am so glad your son found it and let you know, -you never can be too careful!!

I've had one in my scalp before too Phyllis. It's such an aweful feeling.

The worst tick story I can tell you happened two years ago when I was doing a geocache. I somehow walked through a nest of those seed ticks. I was covered with at least 250 ticks. I stripped myself to my undergarments at the car and doused myself with a full, large can of Repel. I had 30 bite in by the time I got home and could fully inspect myself.

I don't cache very much south of I20 (in Georgia) from April through October because the ticks are far worse in the lower part of our state. I also flicked one off my jeans on the way home from my last SC trip. It climbed onto me at a cache in marion, SC. So tick season is in full swing in the South.

Thanks for the wonderful information. My son was bite by a tick several weeks ago also. So we are currently in the watch stage also. He has been sick the last several days and I was totally upset but then when My oldest son & I got sick I was so happy. I know that sounds weird but atleast I knew that it wasn't from the tick bite.

We get ticks to back off on their own by lighting a match, blowing it out, and then touching the hot tip of the match head to them. That way you don't have to worry about yanking them out while leaving their head imbedded under your skin, since they let go by themselves.

That is scary! I've never seen a tick and I hope never to see one. But I would have thought it was a spider probably as well. How old is your son? If he is very embarrased about you seeing him naked everynight and maybe he is a little older or something have him just look for any redness etc and tell him what to watch for so he will know and make sure he knows at the first sign of anything to let you know!

good information...I had so many tick bites when I was a kid..I think every week I either stepped on a rusty nail or had a tick bite. We had a shelter belt of trees around the farm yard to block the wind. We called a certain type of trees Tick Trees because the ticks always got us if we went near them. I remember the last tick I had. I found it on the way out to school on a Monday morning...at the base of my head...on the back of my neck...

Thanks for posting this - with the spread of ticks it's very important.

One of my saddest moments was talking with a mom who said because her daughter's illness was misdiagnosed (Dr. Said it was Measles), she discovered too late that the medicine they were giving to their dog could have saved their daughter.

Very thorough. Ticks stink. Figuratively, of course. But you do find one every once in awhile. Spiders are all poisonous, but most don't bite. They can't. Their jaws are too small. And most won't anyway, unless distrubed. As a result almost anything crawling all over you will likely be disturbed at some point and that is almost unavoidable. Glad to hear it wasn't something too serious.
