OUR 15 YEAR OLD DOG BRANDY IS IN THE HOSPITAL.

Our 15 year old dog Brandy is in the pet hospital. She has been bleeding from her mouth now for several days.  At first we thought she had broken a tooth, because she couldn't eat any crunchy or lumpy food all of a sudden.  Since Saturday I have been giving her ground canned food twice a day which she manages to get down.  I took her into the vet to have her teeth checked and there were not any broken teeth.  When the vet was examaning her, her mouth started bleeding pretty heavily.  The Dr. Was rather alarmed.  He couldn't tell where it was coming from so they are keeping her, doing a blood panel tonight and then putting her under anesthesia tomorrow so he can examine her mouth more closely.  He also thinks she has a heart murmer and a rather severe one.  He doesn't know for sure though, because she was so freaked out from having her mouth examined she wouldn't hold still and was shaking so hard.  Poor baby!  He said because of her age and the possible heart murmer that it will be risky for her and said he was using the least risky anesthesia. We lost her mother, Sandy, on Easter Morning.   I hope we don't lose her too!    Brandy is my late son Dustin's dog!

Trudy, I am sorry to read this. Our pets are in our hearts. Fifteen years is a long time so I hope there is something the vet can still do and that your beautiful Brandy can be comfortably remain by your side for a little longer.

Trudy, I am so sorry. I know how special she is to you, and with her being Dustin's dog, I know the bond you have with her. I lost our Cassie only a couple of months after losing Dustin. I will pray very hard. Don't despair. It could be because she lost her mother. This happened to us: we lost both malteses at age 8 from diabetes. It is heartbreaking, butyou have to be strong!

I am so sorry! I know how my mom suffered so much when my deceased aunt's (her sisters) Siamese cats died one by one in quick succession. They were all very elderly and died of natural causes but it was just so much harder because it was her last living connection to her sister.

Oh Trudy - my thoughts are with you - just think positive - they do monitor very carefully during surgery - It took me a while to find a good vet to my liking...Charley my lab had a set back with the urinary thing - I've written about it - but he's fine now - we cook all his meals and have some homeopathic remedies - the doctor is very kind and working with us - so far so good - Charley is 12. So, I understand your old dog - Charley shook as well and they thought he had heart problems but this Vet said Charley's heart is fine - Also, Trudy - I am not a big fan of flea collars - they can be lethal when they get wet as the poison can be released onto the dog's skin. I am just mentioning that as I see you have one on Brandy.
Trudy, I am praying for you as I know what a bond you have with Brandy - keep us updated. Salud.

How I feel for you, Trudy! Because of the close connection between Brandy and your late son, losing her at this time would be much akin to losing him all over again... The only comfort I can offer is that 15 years is a very long life for dog and I'm absolutely positive that, during that time, you have cared for her and shown her your great affection for her very, very well... When it's time to leave this plane of existence I hope that I can say that about my life...

My heart goes out to you. It may turn out okay. If it doesn't though your heart will tell you what is best option for Brandy. Modern medicine can do wonders for animals!

Oh Trudy, I am so very sorry. I will pray for you, Brandy, and the vet. I pray that your vet gives you the best and most informed recommendation for Brandy, whatever that may be. It's so hard when our pets get old - they're not meant to live as long as we do, and coming to the decision as to WHEN is very, very emotionally difficult. I hope Brandy has a little more time, but I'm sure you'll all do what is best for her.
