The prom is an American right of passage. It's decadent, yet innocent. It's old-fashioned, yet sophisticated. It's oddly familiar, yet uniquely momentous. The prom is the quintessential All-American event. Its roots are southern when young ladies would promenade around the square on the arms of well-behaved young gentleman and under the ever watchful eyes of parents.
I went to my South Carolina prom with a beautiful redhead named Lisa Hunt. We met at a summer arts program the summer before my senior year, and I wanted to go with her because I knew we'd have fun (Lisa loved to laugh), and I'd knew she'd wear something nice (she was rich).
I'm working on a book in my Americana series on the prom, and thought it'd be fun for all of us to share some of our prom memories (and ideas)
here. What did you wear? Who did your hair? What did you drive? Where did you eat? Who did you go with? Was there any scandal? I'll tell, if you will.

My High School prom was in 1974! Yikes!!! I'll have to see if I can dig up any of the pictures.

Kids and their parents spent too much money;
Drinking on prom night can lead to problems including unwanted pregnancies.
The popular kids parade around like kings and queens and other kids dream about becoming royalty instead of hitting the books and learning about what is important in life.
It really is sad.
i think the prom is part of american mythology
Mary Ann in spite of what you say and its truth some traditions are there regardless to logic and need
i left the states some years before i could attend a prom,
judging from my popularity in high school, it was a good thing!
the prom may have been good for popular run of the mill types but for nonconformists it is a true night mare, best skipped
And while my daughter(hence the knocked up)was homeschooled she still went to all home comings and proms at the local HS with her friends.
Here is a pic of junior prom...she and her girl friends went stag.
What happened to the girl?
I have to say though, for all its shortcomings, prom is definitely a right of passage that shouldn't be missed.
