It surprised me last night when Victoria didn't know what a Gazania was. I first found these flowers at a Home Depot around 8 years ago. I needed a good harty flower that could withstand the full bore afternoon sun on my apartment balcony and also would look great in a flowerbox. These blooms love the sun. So they are one of the few flowers I've found that do really well in partial sun or full sun.

The Gazania first originated in South Africa. Gazanias are now a popular ground cover flower in the United States due to thier drought tolorance, poor soil tolorance and brilliant color. A friend of mine in California many years ago told me these things are considered weeds out there. I don't know if that is true or not, but that's what she told me when I first began planting them all those years ago.

According to online information they bloom in early spring through the summer. Here in Georgia, I have had them bloom through November during Inadian Summers. They're a very inexpensive flower and bloom for a better part of the year. You can grow them from seeds or buy them as annuals.

The photos in this article were taken today, 4-26, between all the rain storms. I'm hoping to pick up some of the pink, white and maroon varieties in the coming weeks. That is if Home Depot has them this year. I saved a spot in the flowerbed specifically for them. They're one of my favorite flowers and much less expensive than the Gerbera Daisy.

You got rain? We got rained on in Eatonton a little but got none here.
Great! Now everyone will know just how flower-retarded I am! LOL
Seriously, I really had never heard of these things, but man, they are gorgeous. I will have to look them up when I'm at Home Depot next. Sounds like they're the plant for me. The area where my flower garden is has some of the worst soil on our property. It's really sandy. Just how cheap are they? Cheap flowers is GREAT by me!!! I want more bang for my buck, man. I've pretty much put my flower garden on hold for the moment. I've been working on the area directly in front of our house. I need to go and buy six small shrubs of some sort - no, wait, seven. Any ideas? I'm thinking I'll probably just go with those little buford holly bushes or is it burford? Anyway, I want something that stays green all year round. (I'm hoping the greenness will offset my winter depression.) I had thought about getting azalea bushes but those holly things are so much cheaper and I've had really good luck with the ones I've bought in the past. If I could remember what those other little shrubs are (the ones I photographed for my photo essay that are planted along the back of my flower garden) I would get some of them. But I can't remember what they are. Crap, here I am totally rambling on and on about flowers and plants and stuff. People will think I'm insane. Anyhoo, these gazanias are awesome looking flowers, and I'm going to get some of them. Just gotta get my points moving on the upward path so I can get my next giftcard. We are flat-*** broke right now, so unless I get a giftcard there will be no spontaneous runs to the store for plants for me for a while. Too bad, I was enjoying that. Hehe.

Arlene,
Poulsbo flowers
I would love to mix these in with some marigolds but I am betting it is too cold here to grow them and have them come back if they are perennial.
Lovely photo essay!
Thank you for the info and the beautiful pictures.
