Hi -
I'm asking these questions for a reason. We evaluate all our purchases to try and get the most comfortable clothing that also is practical (and, when possible, try to have clothing that is in style, up to a point). With the budget tighter than ever, we'd really appreciate the feedback - and help
In short, we want to get the most bang for our buck. As the sole woman in a household filled with males, both teens and adults, I'd like to hear from men as well. How many jeans do you own? Which ones are your favorites? Why?
Do any of you hold onto a favorite pair for sentimental reasons (bell bottoms, tye-dyed, embroidered or hippy or trendy styles) or in hopes they'll come back? I have one very old embroidered pair of jeans -or did -until a niece decided they were so old that they were back in style again and "borrowed" them from me. I have yet to see them again.
I've written about this topic before and was surprised to discover how many emotions come up about jeans, especially about www.gather.com/viewArticle.jsp?articleId=281474977136907 and also buying the right jeans and avoiding Mom jeans. I tried to turn the above into clickable links but it isn't working for me right now. THe button to the "insert link" isn't opening, sorry.
Seven and Citizens of Humanity were popular brand names that came up with people who didn't want Mom jeans but did want styles that lasted. Even Gap made the list, although some women find them unfashionable. Opinions varied widely. And then there are the standard Levis. My favorite pair right now happen to come from Target, believe it or not, with a pair of pants bought from Coldwater Creek being a close second.
After searching the net, I discovered that it isn't uncommon for many people to have 20 jeans or more! Even then, many scanned fashion magainzes regularly in hopes of finding yet another pair of dream jeans.
If we are facing tough economic times, I'd like to try and limit our jean choices to those brands which mix practicality and classic style.
So...how many pairs of jeans do you have?
Here's my answer:
I have 10 pairs of jeans and (i confess) had more till I donated plenty to Goodwill. I tend to hang on to jeans, long after I've given up other clothing. I have my fat jeans, my skinny jeans (the ones I hope to wear again someday), my comfortable jeans (the ones I wear around the house but not in public) and my gardening jeans.
I love jeans. They fit my lifestyle. However, some last nearly forever and some don't last well at all. Do you mix fashion and value when you buy jeans? Or do you just go for fashion first and value second? Do you have trouble throwing out jeans or do you buy too many - or too few?
And....are you being forced to rethink your spending habits because of the recession?

As for how many I personally own, probably a dozen pair, with me continuously wearing about half of them. And I can guarantee I spent no more than 20 bucks on any given pair, often times spending only a few bucks if I bought them at a yard sale or on Ebay.
I'm not a fan of Lee or Old Navy as much for their jeans. hope this helps..
The most recent purchase I made was 2 pairs of Tommy Hilfiger jeans. I tried them on & was surprised how nicely they fit - and bought them both~
When I worked clothing retail, not only was I 1 to 2 sizes smaller, I got a nice discount on clothes, so I bought many more jeans then. I gave most of them to Goodwill a couple of household moves ago -- I can't realistically see myself wearing a size 2 again, so there's some thin person out there wearing my old Guess jeans and hopefully as happy with them as I used to be.
i have one that i wear to paint in.
i have 2 that i just bought at a thrift store for $2.00 each that are sexy tight pants for going to the bar.
and one pair that have a matching jacket that is totally killer (and cost a pretty penny) but i look amazing in it. or rather i did when i used to have smaller hips and flatter abs. i refuse to give them up though
I do purchase them when they are on sale. I never pay full price for my jeans.
But I go the easy way.
I have 4 pairs of "Hanes Her Way" pull on jeans. They fit my long legs and wide waist without being too big anywhere (which is usually a problem for me).
And they make my flat butt look great!
Price? $16.99 NOT on sale.
I wear silk blouses with them when I go out.
I never pay full price for the silk, choosing instead to buy end of the season blouses, anywhere from $20 to $35 a piece. And I have all the nice labels, Liz Claiborne, Anne Franks, all bought 50 to 75% off. And they last for YEARS.
I also sleep in long and short silk gowns, bought at Newport News, %off usually about $21. I have 8 long and 6 short gowns with 3 silk robes to match. All bought over the last 10 years, all almost in perfect condition.
Around the house? I don't wear jeans. Or silk blouses.
I wear comfortable soft cotton shorts and little skirts and mainly soft cotton dresses (swimsuit coverups) with spagetti straps. If it is a cooler day? I wear a t-shirt from American Eagle over it. (bought from the clearance rack or from a local store who sells last season's American Eagle shirts for $8.)
You can dress well and inexpensively, you just have to hold your ego and take your time and make your move when the prices are right.
Great article Jo!
All of my jeans are bell bottoms.
