We need a new microwave--what do you recommend?

My mothers old Amana just crashed, and after shopping at the usual -Marts- we decided the GE was what she wanted. It has 1150 watts. A lot of touch buttons, and it is fairly roomy inside. She had a space problem, as to where the old Amana was built in, so that limited our choices. Yes, I did go online, and thought the same thing. I think with most of this stuff, you take your chances...The one bad thing about getting a new one, is that whom ever you buy it from, they will not take your old one.

we originally had a goldstar, it was ok, but after about 4 years it started to make lots of noises, but then I got lucky at a yard sale and picked up a almost new (2 weeks old), in the box microwave for $5. It's a kenmore 1.2 cu. ft., 1200 watts I think. I know I looked at Sears and they were around $100 new. The only thing wrong with it was the lady who had it broke the glass turntable in it and didn't want to spend the money to replace it. I just used the one out of our old one.

Buy what you need - if all you do is warm or thaw or occasionally cook to eat in your microwave, then get one that does what you need. If you have a warehouse membership the prices are sometimes the same as some of the cheaper models because they buy in volume. We had a specific space for ours so we bought one that fit the space and did what we needed - about $50 so there are choices out there. Take your time and spend your money well - make sure that you buy from a store with a good return policy as microwaves ovens sometimes get jousled in shipping and will not work - something just got knocked out of place but don't take it to a repairman, return it to the store so they can send it back for repair.

My GE hasn't given me a bit of trouble, and the potato and popcorn buttons on it cook those things perfectly. It has some sort of sensor cooking thing, and usually does a great job.

GE is generally pretty good.

BM- I think she wants one that will last more than a year or two. The cheapies generally don't last a long time, where as the good ones can easily get 10+ years out of them.

I have a GE and I love it. Its a bigger one and works great. If I recall right we got it at either K-Mart or Meijer years ago. You can by one for less then $150. They dont run that much anymore. Unless you want one that will wash your clothes too. lol

if you don't cook in it, just go inexpensive. They're pretty much all the same. I have a Frigidaire that came with the house. My son hates it. It's push button and has lots of settings. I'm used to it now.

I got a GE from Walmart for less than 100 bucks. It's a full size one I guess, but it works well and its 1250 watts I think.

I am on the lookout too. We have a GE with that faux wooden material. It must be at least 15 years old:) I have been saving my Target cards from BT. Anyways, I don't have any recommendation, but when my time comes I will read lots of online reviews.
I have done this with all our electronic products and I am so glad I did. Epinions is one site, but I also check out Amazon reviews and I think it is either bestbuy or circuit city, which has great consumer reviews as well.

i like goldstar but we got a brand new one from a garage sale for $10 that isn't goldstar but i can't remember the brand name
