Some of my Gather friends know my oldest son is high-functioning autistic. An important bill that could mean private health insurance coverage for autistic children in Florida has just been passed unanimously in the Senate, SB2654. Parents in Florida are trying to get this bill passed by the House as well. While my child may or may not require these services, as his autism is "mild" compared to some other kids, I remember the days when he did not respond to my voice or make eye contact, or when he passed out from seizures. Should he ever need intensive medical care, I want that option to be available in an affordable way for him and for our family! In the meantime, I know there are many desperate, worried parents who need these services like yesterday.
So if you are in the Sunshine State, you can go here: http://www.autismvotes.org/c.frKNI3PCImE/b.4054265/siteapps/advocacy/ActionItem.aspx to contact House Speaker Marco Rubio to encourage him to help this vital bill pass into official legislation. There is a form letter prepared, with room to add your personal story if you care to do so. You can sign with just your name, or include your contact information. I have found that senators and house reps generally send a brief update on what happened with the legislation in question once it was voted on. It only takes a moment or two and could mean so much to those who have spent more than they can afford just to have the chance of reaching their child's inner world, even if briefly.
