The annual free Kids' Day is Saturday May 3d at Fort de Chartres State Historical Site in Randolph County, located near village of Prairie du Rocher, itself nestled below the scenic bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River floodplains.
Kids Day Activities
Kids can get a hands-on experience at activities their counterparts 200 years ago did on an everyday basis May 3 at Fort de Chartres State Historic Site. Not only is there the reconstructed mid-1700's stone fort that was the site of the French civil government to explore, but there are the games.
There are numerous activities that will bring history alive in a way no book could equal. The youngsters can play period yard games like Boule which is French lawn bowling, a sack race, hoop and stick, tug of war, nine pins, or archery. Kids can get their faces painted, write with a quill pen, watch the making of kettle corn, attend a puppet show, or make and use their own jump rope or small leather bag. In the Native American Village they can enjoy storytellers sharing Indian origin stories and see a demonstration of the game of Lacrosse.
Kids can win Bonus Bucks at the various activities which can be spent at Trader Jed's Auction at 3pm or at the trading post throughout the day.
Free Refreshments
There'll be free refreshments...cake and lemonade and the two children who, in French fashion, find the bean in the cake will serve as King and Queen of Kids' Day. Prizes will be awarded.
Location
Fort de Chartres is located along the Mississippi River, four miles west of Prairie du Rocher on Illinois Highway 155.
