Set them for celestial winds.
Hold the tiler firm,
The course ahead is clear."
Be he nature God or chance
His voice is heard
And we shall need
The Captain's quiet command."

"Glance at the sun. See the moon and the stars.
Gaze at the beauty of earth's greening.
NOW, THINK."
Let's make everyday Earth Day. Let's leave a world for our children, of clean air, clean water, no pollution. To do that we must 'rethink' the way we the way we make our products, what we buy, and how we live. Let's teach our children well...
Happy Earth Day everyone!

My 5 year old grandson told me this morning it was Earth Day. I think that's great that kids are becoming aware of it; he isn't even in school yet.

Bert, well said! Here, here...
Yes, let's just hope that the next administration won't muzzle the EPA like this Republican administration has....
I found out a bit about Earth Day that I'd like to share...... Wikipedia says this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Day
"Earth Day is one of two different observances, both held annually during spring in the northern hemisphere, and autumn in the southern hemisphere. These are intended to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth's environment. The United Nations celebrates an Earth Day each year on the March equinox, a tradition which was founded by peace activist John McConnell in 1969. A second Earth Day, which was founded by U.S. politician Gaylord Nelson as an environmental teach-in in the late 1960s, is celebrated in many countries each year on April 22."
So, I "learned" this past weekend (while attending the Dalai Lama's lectures in Ann Arbor, Michigan ;-) that Earth Day has two "origins" John McConnell coined the term and got the UN to recognize it (with Margaret Mead's help...a woman I greatly admire, btw :-) But, it really got off the ground at The University of Michigan (who started "Teach-ins" as a way for universities to protest things safely....i.e. the Vietnam war, etc.) Earth Day was the most successful of these "Teach-ins"....and so April 22 was dubbed the 'official' day. Regardless of"who was on First" first; I stupidly fell into it as the Dalai Lama was the keynote speaker to tens of thousands at U of M's basketball arena.
All of that is to say that they asked the Dalai Lama all kinds of questions about the Earth. He gave his opinions, and went on to elaborate on how we can best preserve life on earth...it was a very interesting 2 hours. After the lecture and questions and answers, we left the arena to hundreds of Chinese students protesting.
The ironic thing was that they were not only protesting the Dalai Lama, but Earth Day itself......too funny. It highlighted to all of us that the Chinese Govt's interest is in production of more and more things.... and economic world dominance......at whatever "costs". The myopic view of blind aggression towards economic 'growth' has to change, eh?
Here is our chance to do real good things for the earth, and for people....BOYCOTT purchases of all Chinese Goods until Tibet is free. Then, as everyone can see in the wild construction in Bejjing; environmental issues must be addressed. A life-affirming view like the Tibetan Buddhists precludes the 'violence' of abuse of our environment....because, guess what? It means hurting all forms of life. Respect for life needs to rule; and that won't be "communicated" to rapists by nice thoughts alone.......cut the profits, and things will change, eh?
:-)
