On September 23, 2007 an editorial posted in the Arkansas Democrat Gazette drew my attention. "Poverty of Thought," written by Bradley R. Gitz can be viewed online http://www.nwanews.com/story.php?paper=adg§ion=Editorial&storyid=202322.
As with most written arguments, Mr. Gitz introduced statistics and dropped the names of economic experts. The last one he introduced was Lawrence Mead and quoted, "Families are poor in America in 2007......because unmarried parents have children and then do not work to regularly support them."
I did not have a problem with the article until his closing statement, where he states the reason that there are people living in poverty in America is because we can't prevent unmarried women have children they can not take care of.
Okay. I wonder if I am the only person to raise an eyebrow to the statement. 50 percent of the responsible parties involved in having children have been left out of the cause of poverty here. We are all responsible for all our actions....not just some of us.
Thoughts?

I don't think he's trying to absolve the fathers of their parental responsibilities. I have no doubt he is more than happy to blame both women and men for having children out of wedlock. He pretty much says so right there in the article. In fact, I'm surprised he didn't blame them for global warming, terrorism, the sub-prime mortgage crisis, and the abomination of a sitcom that was The Michael Richards Show.
Don't get me wrong, I am far from a man hater - Am actually helping my husband with a custody suite for his daughter - and did you know the father can NOT go to the local child support office and offer to pay? The female has to initiate. The whole thing makes no sense to me..............thanks for all the responses ~j
"Democratic candidates can talk all they wish about poverty in America, but it is unlikely that a Democratic victory in next year's presidential election or even the most radical and expensive antipoverty programs that could be enacted thereafter will move the numbers more than a percentage point or so. Why ? Because we haven't yet figured out how to prevent unmarried young women from having children they can't take care of. "
As we're already in a recession and have been, long before the government admitted to it and are rapidly sliding into a depression, THIS is the best the jerk can come up with?

He, my darling...is an idiot...as most of the commentator in the democrat-Gazette are.
I get the central Arkansas edition and I completely ignore the editorial pages anymore.
