Way too many people in the USA & Canada seem to think that horses are not meant to be meat animals. This is not true elsewhere in the world and did not used to be true here either. Now we have the PETA crowd & their ilk demanding that horse meat be removed from the larder! Bull! Horse meat is an excellent emat. it is much less fat riddled than beef, tasty as well as nourishing. In many nations it is a regular in the butcher shops. Horse meat has been on the US menu for many years. Horse meat was common in Hispanic communities & still is in many locales. I know several stores where I can & do purchase it. I have eaten horse in Canada, Russia, Germany, France, Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kirghizstan, Mongolia, Viet Nam, China, Afghanistan, India, Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Serbia, Armenia, Uruguay, Paraguay, Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala & Korea.
Horses have been a meat source for thousands of years. Long before they were used as beasts of burden and as a means of transportation they were a meat source as were all other grazing animals. Just as the caribou a.k.a. the reindeer, is a in northern Europe, the cow, the goat, the pig, the camel, the llama, etc. Meat is meat and as such it is a source of protein & is a nutritious part of our diet.
Horse meat is a delicious meat and there is nothing wrong with eating it!

THey ground it like hamburger meat.
I'm living in Russia, but I NEVER saw or heard anything like that. I really wonder who makes shows on your TV... ;-)
Blessings - S.
I'm thinking I don't like deer meat all that much so I'm not sure I'd be in for horse meat. The recipe looks good though.
Horses are eaten in Western Europe, France, for example. Why are Americans so stupid-squeamish about so many perfectly good meat?
Rabbit is another tasty choicd I've seen Americans get all sily about but which is not only eaten worldwide, but even by my southern relatives who hunt them. I lov e rabbit barbequed!
Now I have eaten several different animals that would be strange to others.
What people need to realize is that people eat what meat is available in their area. Such as : People closer to the ocean eat the type of animals or marine life in their area. Where as someone living in the woods may be eating bear, squirrel, possum or raccoon.
Horses were used as a work animal. That is why they were not eaten in most ares area of the USA. As they were more valuable used as work horses.
Deer - hate it
squirrel - love it BBQ
turtle - like parts of it
Chicken - who hasn't
duck - kinda greasy but yummy
shark - like it
clams - love them
shrimp - enjoy them
quail - yummy in my tummy
pheashant - yes, I am a bird eater
frog legs - taste like chicken
pig - yes, love it all. Probably the most unhealthiest of all animals I have eaten.
turkey - another yummy
rabbit - hate it
many different types of ish - some I like, others I don't
I know I have a longer list than this. I just can't think of them all right now.
BTW, bear must be very well cooked. The only 3 animals that can get trichonosis are pigs, bears, and humans.
Excuse me but are actually trying to say that YOU know better than the majority of the world...? There was a time when were proclaimed to be what you said but in this day and age you need to look at the world as a whole to see that we are no more.....!
And you know what effet you are having on me with your idiotic blathering? I am going to an ethnic market specifically in search of horse meat for dinner. I wasn't planning on it, but you annoyed me into the choice. Howdya like them apples?
I wonder if there's a place in the world where they are offended at Americans and others for eating beef and chicken? There are Muslims and Jews who would not eat PORK but they don't stop us from doing it (of if they try, we don't listen).
Mention this infront of my sister, and I guarentee her reaction will be the exact opposite of mine.
I cheerfully eat goat and rabbit. Remember that on the family farms that were much more common in the past than now, all the meat the family eats is "personally known".
Eating horse is NOT "disgustingly rejected" in the US, except by the same morons that think hunting and eating deer is eating Bambi. Snort!
You PETA idiots get no respect, you know.
As for me, the horse steak is marinating as we speak. Why doncha come on over for dinner from the grill?
