We were very busy today getting plants in weeding and generally sprucing up the yard. It was a gorgeous day, though it did get hot toward the late afternoon.
We went plant shopping around noon and my
husband bought 9 tomato plants and I bought a flat of "mojo grass", two dianthus, two salvia and one purple coral bells to plant in the bed between the raised bed with bushes that run along the front of the house and the front sidewalk.
This front bed was overgrown and not very attractive. I raked and pulled up all the overgrown weeds and who knows what else.
Then I planted the salvia, dianth
us and coral bells.
I used the mojo grass along the front of the bed.
The "stones" you see in these pictures are actually hard plastic brick shaped. They each have two long plastic spikes that go in the top and then are pressed or hammered into the ground. It looks very nice and I moved these from a bed I tried to start last year but there just wasn't enough sun in my selected spot and nothing came back this year.
I also separated several of my hostas and filled in some bare areas in the azalea bed in the front yard.
Tomorrow my husband is going to the land fill to get some free mulch and we'll mulch the front bed. Depending upon the weather, and his inclination toward making second trip, he can mulch the roses and tomatoes as well.
My favorite acquisition for the yard is my little grape vine.
It's very small now, but is supposed to grow to four feet high. We won't have grapes this year but should have a nice harvest next year. I'm really excited because I've never tried to grow grapes before.
All together I'd say we worked over four hours in the yard, doing some pretty heavy-duty digging, weeding, cleaning up etc. I can already tell I'm going to be sore tomorrow but it was worth it, because the yard is shaping up very nicely.

I would have liked to fill the bed in a little more, but we didn't want to spend too much on plants. Next year I'll add more plants.
