On June 17 every year, "The day of the Crazies" is celebrated here in San Miguel de Allende. it's a combination of Halloween and Carnival mixed together. People dress in incredibly imaginative costumes and march around town throwing candy at the onlookers. Hawkers sell refreshments and paper umbrellas wich serve a duel purpose. They shade you from the sun and when turned upside down can be used as a receptacle to catch random candy which coming flying by like missiles.

At night they burn "castillos" or castles, which are amazing architectural constructions that send out brilliantly colored firecrackers that spin and whirl like supernova. They fill the night with amazing shapes that dazzle the senses. Kids run around with cardboard boxes over their heads to protect themselves from flying embers. It is a glorious celebration of energy in motion.
