My favorite emoticon has to be the winking smiley face. This is a wonderfully ambiguous icon. It allows you to get away with all types of inappropriate, incorrect, mean, self-indulgent, egocentric, flagrant, curmudgeonly, haphazard, and cryptic comments you want to make. It leaves people unsure of where you stand so they typically will put you in the category that they most agree with then think you are brilliant.
For example you can take a very simple sentence such as "That was a really good movie." Simple enough obviously I enjoyed the movie. Now add your emoticon "That was a really good movie ;-)". Now what did I think of the movie? Did I like it, then why am I winking? Was I being sarcastic? Maybe I hated the movie? Maybe it is an inside joke and I didn't even see the movie. What is going on? Where am I? I am so confused. ;-)
