Yes, there are reports that an earthquake did, indeed, occur in Illinois this morning.
Although earthquakes in the central region of the United States are not completely unheard of, they are certainly a rarity. And, rare is not the same as never, so sometimes they do happen.
Residents of Illinois, Indiana and Kentucky that were unaware of this reality were definitely made aware of it as of 4:36 A.M. this morning. That's when a quake with an estimated magnitude of 5.4 hit Southern Illinois.
So far, there are no repots of significant damage, but it's still early. A moderate earthquake, such as this one, in a region not used to temblors, is likely to result in damage to both buildings and their contents.
Here in California, we pretty much "ride out" small and moderate earthquakes. But in this case, people not used to them are affected, so it's sure to have more than rattled nerves.

One man in rural Iowa was woke up by his wife who told him the bed was shaking. He told her it wasn't because of anything he had done, and went back to sleep.
I have an aunt in Southern Illinois. She made the usual remarks, that her house was shaking and making a lot of noise.
I'm so glad that there weren't a lot of injuries.
It's funny I almost miss earthquakes. I came from Taiwan and we have it a lot. I haven't had any in 10 years.
