My First Crucifixion
I have traveled the world looking for Jews living in remote places. I have taught Jewish History and the New Testament. However, as I am currently living in San Miguel Allende, Mexico, I had the incredible opportunity to view my first crucifixion. What an unbelievable experience. It was surreal, corny, brutal, and intense, all at the same time!
The town in which it was portrayed is called San Luis Rey and the inhabitants used a remarkable amount of ingenuity to create their costumes on a shoestring budget. For example, some of the Roman legionaries used the brush part of a broom on their helmets to simulate a plume. The audience ate candy, ice cream, and soda and carried umbrellas in the hot sun.
Truly, it was street theatre at its best!
Here are my images of this event...
