Last Tuesday, Lynne was volunteering in my classroom as we were busy preparing for our Mother Earth Day Literary Concert. Earth Day is celebrated each year on April 22. But next week is school vacation week in Massachusetts and so we decided to have our Celebration this Friday, April 18th. One of the songs we will be singing at the concert is Bill Harley's "Turn the World Around". It's a great song and has many hand movements that the children enjoy. Lynne had fun photographing the children as they practiced.
TURN THE WORLD AROUND
We come from the mountain.
We come from the mountain.

Go back to the mountain

and turn the world around.

We come from the mountain

Go back to the mountain
And turn the world around.

We come from the fire.
We come from the fire.

Go back to the fire
And turn the world around.

We come from the fire

Go back to the fire
And turn the world around.

We come from the water.
We come from the water.

Go back to the water
And turn the world around.

We come from the water
Go back to the water
And turn the world around.

We come from the sky.
We come from the sky.

Go back to the sky
And turn the world around.

We come from the sky
Go back to the sky
And turn the world around.

We come from the mountain

We come from the fire

Go back to the water

And turn the world around.

We come from the sky
Go back to the sky
And turn the world around.

"Turn the World Around" is one of several songs from Bill Harley's album, Big, Big, World. In his biography Bill wrote:
"Everybody worries about things being 'educational' with kids. I believe everything is educational, in that it says something about how one looks at the world - it imparts a knowledge, or world-view. Children learn more from context than they do from explicit lessons, so assume they're working to understand something - they learn vocabulary and language not from a dictionary or worksheet, but from conversation, they learn songs not from reading music, but from singing with someone who loves to sing, and they learn hope and kindness and cooperation not from being told to have them, but by experiencing them."
I have to agree with Bill and so when I want to teach the children some important concept I usually find a song that has imbedded within the lyrics that idea. Children are natural singers, and by this I don't mean they all have beautiful voices. Over the years, I have discovered quite the contrary. Lol. But young people feel the beat of the music...and their bodies start moving ...and then they just sing out in song. It's a beautiful thing to witness.

Would that we all could just sing out...regardless of whether we have a voice or not...and fill the world with song.
Lynne is an incredible photographer as well as a volunteer. Her images are just the best.
"Thank goodness!" she said, "All those hours I spent with Peterson's Field Guides taking those walks the day before paid off!"
It was all the more touching in my adulthood knowing that she went out and purposely made those lessons to teach me a deeper appreciation of the world around me.
You remind me so much of her.

Whenever I start feeling disillusioned about the fate of the world and then I see one of your photo-essays about you and "your kids" -- hope springs anew within my soul that, if nowhere else on the face of the planet, there are dozens of present and former kindergardners somewhere in Mass. who have been instructed in the things that really matter and they "get it"...
Thank you for posting to Make me Laugh
I am so glad you moved to our little town several months ago...Cam has added another refreshing voice to our circle time conversations. We are a RAINBOW PLANET... he has it right there!
I am glad the children brought a smile to your face this morning. I only wish you could see them in action....though they sing in unison, they have had developed their own singing stance...some serious...some flying high...all unique in their presentation! It's very difficult maintaining a serious face as the conductor! Lol
Love grows one by one
Two by two and four by four
Love grows round like a circle
And comes back knocking at your front door
One by one we make a song
Voice by voice we sing it
Choir by choir we fill up the world
With the music that we bring it
(chorus)
So let me take your hand in mine
We'll each take the hand of another
One by one we'll circle the world
With our sisters and our brothers!
(chorus)

A double whammy...a feature in both Writing Essentials and Triple Name. Did you see that Lynne?
Thanks for dropping by the rehearsal today.
This is how I feel my days. Nights are a different story...it used to be Gather but I think I need to check out some serious other sites.
God bless you for all you do...

I think Lynne and I make a good team...I blab away and she clicks away! And together we have a grand time. I'm always curious to see her pictures after a session... she always captures expressions I was unaware of at the time.
As for environmental studies, you know how close that is to my heart. Of course I would find someway of integrating it into the reading program
Thank you for stopping by. That was really neat how you were able to obtain tickets for the whole family for Leah's family.
Am I giving you inspiration for when you go back in the classroom next year? Some people just don't get it how teaching can be so much fun. Even 4th and 5th grade teachers shake their heads and say they could never teach kindergarten or first or second grade because it looks like too much work. If they only knew. I have taught every grade from K-12 except second grade and I find teaching the little ones so much more fun.
Once the two concerts are over, the school closes for spring break...I'm flying down to Alabama to faith h's home for some sun and relaxation. Yahoo...!
Thanks for posting this to my group (All Photo Essays Here @ allphotoessays.gather.com)!
I'm glad you didn't inhale! Lol
Who cares if we sing off-key....just sing!
