My Tour of Pike County

It was a nearly perfect day today. The weather was just warm enough not to have to wear a jacket. A few puffy white clouds dappled the cerulean skies.

My brother-in-law, Roy C., and I enjoy taking pictures so he and I went tooling around Pike County, IL to snap a few shots.

We started the day off with lunch at our local Mexican restaurant. It's usually really good, but they were off their game today. First, we got our plates one at a time, second, my sister's cheese quesadilla's cheese was about the size of a quarter, and finally, my chile rellenos were a bit tough.

From there, Roy and I head over to the Old Baptist Cemetery. That's where Laura Hawkins, aka Becky Thatcher, is buried. I was saddened by it's state of disrepair. We weren't able to find her.

Next was the Mississippi River. The river was quite high. We saw a heron, but it flew off before we could get a picture of it.

We went from there to the Kinderhook Cemetery. There's one section of the cemetery that has some really cool headstones. I can't even imagine what some of them must have cost.

We went to Pittsfield and Griggsville to go through some cemeteries there.

Our last stop was the Saverton Lock and Dam at the Mississippi River and I finally got to see the pelicans! The river was quite high. Last week when I was there I could walk out across the levy, today part of the boat ramp was under water. It was fun to watch the pelicans and the jumping fish. (I don't know what kind they were.)

My face is sunburnt! It was a fun day, and I got to know my brother-in-law a bit better. And I took lots of pictures! 209 pictures in fact! Thanks, Roy for taking me on a tour of Pike County!

Beautiful pictures. Did you know that Pike County is where the term, "He's a Piker" came from. It means someone very stubborn, I think.
