Metamorphic slate
Waiting eons for the paint
A brief life imparts
Black dots on red crawl color
Across canvas of worn rock.


For the photo that inspired my first tanka: Paints on Slate
And many thanks to Jim Ross who has encouraged and inspired my new found interest in cinquains and such (tankas being "such").

OK...what is a Tanka?

A tanka is a haiku-type poem of of 31 syllables in 5 lines. The syllables are arranged as 5, 7, 5, 7, 7. Each line should be a complete idea or image as in haiku.

Jim Ross, one of my favorite gather poets and writers, has a group dedicated to the form: Tanka

Wow, thanks so much for that poem and that has inspired me to paint my ladybug on slate.

Unfortunately I am working a bit too much now that spring has sprung. I work for a company that imports grape vines from Europe and sells to the wineries and growers in our area. It's a fun job and a two month long job, pays well and I love WINE!

But I will paint my ladybug - just not right away!

What a wonderful job! I hope you'll be posting wines, vines and other fun photos! Are you in the area that produces Ice Wines? MN has tried and a few local wineries create the "style."

You bet, Rose! I've been following a local winery for three years now as they have attempted the process. First year the birds got to the late grapes, then it didn't get cold soon enough and this year it got cold too soon!

Ok, the vines are covered in netting so the birds can't get to the grapes. Yes we produce some of the worlds finest ice wines. Picked at a temperature no one wants to be around I've picked the grapes myself with my family!!!

We are a huge producer of some of the best wines in the world as well. My favorite is an oaked chardonnay but if it's white I love it!
